After a long hiatus, New York Math Circle is planning on restarting a series of mathematics courses for teachers. We would be grateful if you could help us to identify the courses most beneficial and attractive to the mathematics teaching community by completing this form. NYMC will provide a certificate of participation to the attendees.

Math Enrichment 1 (HS). For those who wish to significantly enrich Mathematical skills and awareness while sharpening their Mathematical insight regardless of level of expertise. Especially useful for those who wish to enrich their classes and to those who may advise Math Clubs or Math Teams. A Mathematical journey through the Secondary School curricula (and some Calculus) exploring fundamental issues and special topics traditionally not encountered in the usual courses. Emphasis is placed on structural underpinnings of Mathematics.

Math Enrichment 2 - Multivariate Calculus. Topics for this course will be drawn from Calculus, Vector Calculus, Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra. The course is designed to reacquaint the participants with concepts in a gentle manner and to provide a wealth of illustrative, illuminating problems. Classic problems will be included.

Calculus Revisited. Topics from first year Calculus are revisited and viewed from several perspectives. Emphasis is placed on the underlying structural principals and pervasive unifying themes. Both classic and non-standard problems are presented together with some special theorems and alternate proofs. In addition, tips for presentation and course design will be discussed.

Math Team for Teachers. This mini course is designed for teachers who intend to coach/advise a Math Team, a Math Club, or a related extracurricular activity. It can also be taken by those who simply enjoy doing mathematics and solving Math Team type questions. Participants will learn how to conduct a Math Team, become acquainted with many different types of math competitions, and get to know many of the sources and resources that are available.

Crafting Mathematical Proofs

Problem Analysis, Research, and Writing. Crafting the Mathematical research paper at the Secondary School (and early Undergraduate) level; a guide for teachers and advisors. Intended for those wishing to encourage student research, guide student inquiry, and train students to compose well-crafted Mathematical projects. The entire process of creating a Math Research paper/project will be explored in great detail. Problem Analysis, problem posing, sources, resources, written and oral presentations, extensions, and techniques of writing will be examined. Many exemplars will be studied ranging from the basic expository paper to a paper in which an original idea is explored and developed.

Algebra++ (polynomial, complex, symmetric functions, etc.). These sessions concentrate on expanding an enriching some of the topics normally (but not as frequently in the new curricula) encountered in a second and third year of Secondary School Algebra. Material is drawn from the Polynomial Functions and Theory of Equations, Complex Numbers and Vectors, Inequalities, Symmetric Functions, and many more. Topical explorations will be propelled by a specially selected collection of provocative problems.

A Little More Trigonometry

Gems from Geometry. This is a short but scenic voyage slightly outside of the usual realm of secondary school Plane Euclidean Geometry. Highlights include a wealth of sources and resources together with a complement of delightful problems, surprising results and a collection of very useful theorems. Among the topics included are Collinearity and Concurrency, Cyclic Polygons and Ptolemy's Theorem. Special Points and Lines associated with Triangles and Circles. Surprising consequences of the Pythagorean Theorem, etc.

More Number Theory. Assuming a basic knowledge of the essential Elementary Number Theory including Primes, Divisibility, Congruences and Linear Diophantine Equations, participants will continue to explore some additional Number Theoretic treasures. Topics may include but are not limited to More Divisibility, a deeper probe of the Arithmetic Functions d(n), φ(n), τ(n) and μ(n), the Pell Equation, Quadratic Reciprocity, and a collection of special problems and novel results.

Invitation to the NYSML-ARML experience. The course is designed to attract students, teachers, and any others who may not be acquainted with this event and hopefully allow them to ultimately become involved with ARML and NYSML as team members, coaches, observers or just casual visitors. Those already acquainted would certainly be welcome. The rich source material afforded by those competitions forms the core of our course. Although the course is not "contest prep", it will provide an opportunity for extensive Mathematical enrichment. There will be special emphasis placed on developing and crafting proofs and on the team building aspects common to these competitions. Teachers and students share in joint sessions. We want participants to polish communication skills, share insights, learn from each other's ideas, and enjoy a sense of camaraderie.

Pell's Equation (Single session)

Conjugates (Single session). We've all asked students to use conjugates to simplify expressions such as 1/(2+√3). Participants will discover that the conjugate relationship leads to solutions of other problems that are far more interesting.
