SUMMER READING
Milford High School is instituting a new Summer Reading Program. For Summer 2017, we are offering over 90 titles from which to choose that have been submitted by our faculty and staff. As educators we want to inspire a love of reading and teach our students that reading is an enjoyable and social activity that fosters intellectual curiosity. There are some mature titles on the list. These books are designated with an asterisk and are limited to Juniors and Seniors. Students and parents are encouraged to read book reviews online and to gather more information at www.amazon.com, www.goodreads.com, or www.barnesandnoble.com.

All students in the Class of 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 are required to select a book with the exception of specific Advanced Placement courses that have mandatory summer reading assignments. Students enrolled in Advanced Placement English Literature, Language, United States History, Psychology, World History, Government, Art History and Spanish are exempt. Selections will be made during English classes (via the Google Form) prior to the end of the school year. The link to the Google form is posted on the homepage of the high school website. A day and time will be scheduled in September for students to engage in a book discussion with their peers who read the same book, and the teacher who recommended the book. Students are required to take brief notes while reading the book in preparation for the book discussion. One side of a sheet of paper is sufficient for the notes. Students will bring both the book (hard copy or electronic) and the page of notes to the Summer Reading discussion in September.

Based on your notes and participation in the book discussion, students will receive a Pass/Fail grade. Your participation in the Summer Reading program will be recorded on your official Milford High School transcript and a passing grade will be worth 0.5 credits.

Students must select a book by June 20, 2017. Students who do not select a book by June 20 will be assigned one of the selections.

We hope you enjoy our new Summer Reading Program!
Best regards,
Mrs. Banach
