Occupy Cafe @ NatGat Visioning: Drafting a “Declaration of Interdependence”

Overview:

Occupy Cafe is so honored and pleased to have been asked to participate in the Occupy National Gathering here in Philly.  Our four days of conversation thus far have been rich and inspiring to us, and we hope that our participants have had similar experiences.  

On this final day of the Gathering, with “visioning” as the overall theme, we have decided to offer our own version of a process, with the possibility of a final outcome being the drafting of a single “Declaration of Interdependence” upon which all participants consent.

Final Draft:

The statement below was the product of the collaborative efforts of ~60 people over the course of one day, infused with the thoughts and energy of the overall Gathering as well as the conversations we had together in the Cafe from 6/30-7/3 (pdf available here):

Declaration of Interdependence /“We”

Preamble:

We are an interdependent world community. Recognizing we are unique and whole as individuals, yet part of a greater whole as members of human society we seek to create a society that heals the social cancers that so infect our cultures today.  Every piece is essential, every pain is shared, as we are a living organism.  

 Accepting the responsibility as authors of our society:        

-we declare that everyone must have an opportunity to participate.  All voices are heard and considered.  My neighbors’ needs are my needs and my neighbors’ are global;  therefore everyone’s needs must be met in order to thrive as a global society.

 -we declare trust in our universal humanity and recognition of our capability to transcend fear, and function from compassion and love.  

 -we declare our commitment to respect and steward the interdependent web of all existence.  We evolve processes and structures for higher awareness and wisdom of our Earth, people and other animals, ecosystems, and the entire universe, now and into the future.

Final Statement/ Postamble:

 We support the inalienable rights of all beings, which cannot be given or taken, bought or sold.  We declare our commitment to these points by working together in solidarity for a thriving sustainable Earth.

Process Flow:

One extended dialogue in five phases, from 9am to ~3pm Eastern Daylight, with a lunch break from 12-1pm.  We suggest you join for the whole process, although you are welcome to join us for whatever time period suits you.

Steve: we are dependent on each other and everyone is dependent on us. interdependence.

Jim: Something about balance is required in the declaration.

Dan: yes, we have to be individuals at the same time we are contributing to the interdependence. independence and interdependence.

Steve: can we refer to it as recognizing we are WHOLE as individuals and yet PART OF a greater WHOLE in interdependence.

Dan: The paradox, cognitive dissonance in independence and interdependence.

Jim: This is what we are trying to remove. This dysfunction of society, we are seeking new ground to stand on.  The dissonance is removed by “being here now”.  

Dan: it is “I love you”.  We have to find a higher plane. Words can lock us in a box.

Steve: Putting it together we have to be in the NOW to get out of the ego. Its in the ego that conflict occurs. Ego is never in the now.

Jim: the power of love, and the Taoist context of being whole in ourselves in the now moment and wholly interdependent. 

Dan: Holmes said of declaration of independence “it is a living document”

Jim: Words do have limitations. The EXPERIENCE OF being here is different from words of “being here”.

Dan: “we are all in this together”.

Jim: Being “all in this together” we need 2 migrate from being a nation of LAWS to being a nation of principles.  

Steve: We have to transcend rules and policies. Many folks come out of childhood and recognize that we must have rules and then get stuck there, instead of moving to real adulthood and a principled existence.

At the same time, we need to honor where everyone is in the process. Spiral dynamics suggests our role is to help folks get to the next step.

DRAFT OF DECLARATION:

We are an interdependent world community. Iwanka has lot of talents and gifts and never been received payment for the gifts. She cares for free and unwaged labor decision making in the collective society.  Her skill sets are cultivating a culture of growth in a new manner of innovation in the Occupy Movement.

 

Mushin ~ parachuted as a cognitive agent in a patriarchal culture and the last 12 years edge walked between worlds discovering a unit of our humanity the Lakota people at Pine Ridge Reservation who have conserved a 7,000 year dignified manner of human interactions in social relationships.  My interest is the notion of appreciative inquiry and dialog as a living live speech process bringing forth dignity in human autonomous and co-creating a trans~formative community generating a platform for change that enactively embodies trusted committed sustainability in 21st century.

 

Greg, philly, 45 years old IT expert and want to be an aritist ~ exchange student in Mexico, effects of colanialism , eastern philosophies, spirit of the forests teach me, personal awakening staterd,

 

Suzanne ~ lost everything in the last decade, house burnt down in 2003, Gov’t decision  not to put out the fire, following govt. rules rather than thinking about the needs of the people.

Non violence is the most responsible action of compassion in domains of human concerns.

Round three ~ What declaration of interdependent consent can you agree to make inspire the arising commons in the occupy movement

 

Consent is primary to listening to objection is a primary to inner consenting authority and what you can live to bring forth collaboration.  Consent what I can live with, agree to and move forward today as a solution to begin and move forward.

 

Round Three ~ What is a declaration of inter-dependence that I can agree to and the objections I currently have with the current process? What are the objections I currently carry and isolate my voice and activities with others?

I object to dead speech acts operating in discourse, institutions, cultural practices in the swept along drift versus live speech acts in appreciative inquiry and inquiry in designing a living future community of humanity.  

Cheryl ~ Weaving the fabric of community among networks of networks at all levels of community. Sharing common values and beliefs working for a common purpose.  

Cheryl ~ Current societal norms and belief in the “illusion”  oppress the human spirit, stiffel co-creativity and innovation. I believe the more resourceful we are with one another, more valuable to resource we become to our families, our communities and our world.

Phil ~ only chance to transform anything is that we all individually commit to the step of inter~dependence to ideologies, dreams and hope and we are ready to begin to declare inter-dependent community.

Phil ~ read your piece recently and what you accomplished in your network very similar to what you are participating in today.  The problems of inflexibility we claim tighter to tighter to something that is right.  Member of Occupy SF and Ben Roberts what Phil and Ben are doing is bringing people together.

Cheryl ~ making a shift of way of being in presence.  What prevents people from “being” good neighbors and freely giving and fearlessly receiving deeds of love? Are we able to shift from “making things happen”: to “letting things happen”and still stay true to self and the larger world” and taking responsibility for what we care about.  We become true to to self and make our own unique contributions to the common good.  

Phil ~ changing your state of being is where it starts and how do we get there other than through your own personal inner trans~formation.

Cheryl ~ Manifesting the Golden Rule in the world by committing our lives to serving others. Living our lives freely giving and fearlessly receiving deeds of love.

Phil ~ i just think find ways to have figured it all and when I tell the world and everyone will see how great I am.  I can only do it with others and the shift in being with others, develop and

Phil ~ micro cosmic perception of such great genius isolated being wasted in not connectedness.  I and we are connecting.  To beginning to create the circle to bring forth the world.

Cher ~ soaking in turn my attention and will over to god, i am not in control, lot of people living in an illusion, confusion.  Battle of warriors.  Checker in a grocery store, way beyond my wildest dreams.  The old is showing it’s skin and turtle into the tortious shell.  Mother’s don’’t know how to protect their children.  Wake up and dispel fear.

Mushin ~ Who is us?  Who is we?  Ubiquitous referencing that now means nothing and is distrusted due to the manner of utilization in discourse, institutions (state and private dead speech actors), and fragmented dysfunctional cultural patterns where every “voice” co~opts the whole in designing a future together in a limited sense of an indoctrinated truth or reality.  

Phil Mastrocola has disappeared so I am alone,  and reflecting on this:

Homo sapiens humans are biological wise~sing up social loving animals in all the units of our humanity, past~present~future!  Is that assumption true or false?  Can it be grounded or is it ungrounded and a mistaken view point?  I submit it has been grounded in leading explorers of physics, biology and cosmological scientific explanations.  Not in theoretical assumptions rather in depth human experience, general systems scientific investigation and what is happening in real time and pure play within the appreciative inquiry and dialog in this conversational cafe.  The primary fundamental “Biological Knowing” within our “Dynamic Adaptable Temporal Virtual Identities” is we passionately desire in this moment to draw closer together.  The permanent domain that is the fundamental root of human understanding that has generated the current globalization and breakdowns being experienced.

I am committed to a new integrated model structuring appreciative inquiry and dialog that exploits the technological capacity of integrating the privacy of human autonomy from this notion of inner authorship mastering the complexity in trusted Person to Person dignity from the ultimate locus of control being in person as a “technological node of empowerment to everyone’s narrative and human commitment”  The process of the foundation is questioning and creating a clearing for learning in a global appreciative conversation inventing a platform for change that has deep systemic roots in cultural revolution (Chile) and design possible possibities in designing a future.

The real innovation of elder’s envisioning is being demonstrated by this grandmother who speaks into the real innovative possible possibility of caring, feeding and nurturing one another in a new cafe where everyone is blessed, honored, valued and heard as a legitimate creative generative intelligence in an emerging “arising commons in OUR SHARED HUMANITY.”

How do get beyond Us-Them?

incorporate the wisdom of the labor movement, the consciousness raising methods of the  women’s liberation movement; we need to hear  the anti Globalization people from Seattle, the  Trotskyites, the Marxists, the Buddhist activists, Sikunsky about Turtle Island, Arab Spring, the People’s Park Incident, the Port Huron papers, the diggers from California, even the progressive caucus of the U.S. Congress

The principle of compassion lies at the heart of all religious, ethical and spiritual traditions, calling us always to treat all others as we wish to be treated ourselves. Compassion impels us to work tirelessly to alleviate the suffering of our fellow creatures, to dethrone ourselves from the centre of our world and put another there, and to honour the inviolable sanctity of every single human being, treating everybody, without exception, with absolute justice, equity and respect.

It is also necessary in both public and private life to refrain consistently and empathically from inflicting pain. To act or speak violently out of spite, chauvinism, or self-interest, to impoverish, exploit or deny basic rights to anybody, and to incite hatred by denigrating others—even our enemies—is a denial of our common humanity. We acknowledge that we have failed to live compassionately and that some have even increased the sum of human misery in the name of religion.

We therefore call upon all men and women ~ to restore compassion to the centre of morality and religion ~ to return to the ancient principle that any interpretation of scripture that breeds violence, hatred or disdain is illegitimate ~ to ensure that youth are given accurate and respectful information about other traditions, religions and cultures ~ to encourage a positive appreciation of cultural and religious diversity ~ to cultivate an informed empathy with the suffering of all human beings—even those regarded as enemies.

We urgently need to make compassion a clear, luminous and dynamic force in our polarized world. Rooted in a principled determination to transcend selfishness, compassion can break down political, dogmatic, ideological and religious boundaries. Born of our deep interdependence, compassion is essential to human relationships and to a fulfilled humanity. It is the path to enlightenment, and indispensable to the creation of a just economy and a peaceful global community.

 We recognize that ownership is another name for enslavement and we will strive towards a culture of gifting and sharing recognizing the model of community agreements as a substitute for deeds of ownership. In so doing we acknowledge the travesty of the”occupation’ of Turtle Island, end the festishizing of the founding fathers, and strive to re integrate ourselves into the natural order of existence with all other species.

We aspire to model, through biomimicry, methods that are already in existence in the living earth. Permaculture is a shining example of this model.

We recognize that education needs to be a real life, experiential, joyous, playful journey of discovery and creativity.

We recognize the inherent will of children and vow to end the propaganda and indoctrination of future generations.

Protecting all sentient beings in balance...from a yesterday conversation

Finding/feeling connected to people who also are feeling “disconnected” from the “mainstream” public discourse and who are trying to create a “new society”...with a connection to history and an intention to not repeat the mistakes of “the past”

Making room for everyone and moving towards making space for everyone...and for non-violence

Occupy being a core for building an “alternative” to what we find to be corrupt--no longer dependent on corporate rule; build the alternative rather than destroy what against

Phenomena of being “too busy”...publicize that we have a choice in how we use our time and attention to do what we say we want done

What are we/I too busy doing to do what we/I claim to be most important to us/me?  

There is a real direct experience of urgency and overwhelm and fear...and how do we slow down

In honoring the value of diversity and making space for all of “us”: Some of us are fearful, angry, hungry, depressed, busy and can’t (fill in the blank)...how do we extend “listening” to each other long enough for The Other to release what’s in their “way” and give expression to their full potential?

How can widen our circle to include those who suffer from the dis-ease of “greed”?

A vision of Occupy as a “watering hole” where we come for re-freshment and re-connection.  AND how do we mobilize at the Watering Hole to co-create collaborative, collective action?

I value the hidden and trust that we take from each other what was “given” in a moment and take it forward...when we have so many choices these days.

Resources of space, time and money...and how we make choices about using--allocating those resources in our personal and communal lives.

How do get beyond Us-Them?

The answer is to build the alternatives...eg community farming, local economies...would like to see Occupy move in that direction.

True revolution comes mostly thru what we do in our daily lives than in efforting to shift “corporate”--”Wall Street” institutions.

Two “battles” to be fought: internal and external

To build something sustainable...need to “walk the talk” from the inside out; and to live-into the responsibilities that the “rights” of our privilege confer on us even in this “devolved” form of democracy that is “ours” in the US

How do we live daily lives and “communal” lives that are coherent and consistent with what we say we value and the experience we say we are seeking?

What has come before us and the hope of building upon that:

To act or speak violently out of spite, chauvinism, or self-interest, to impoverish, exploit or deny basic rights to anybody, and to incite hatred by denigrating others—even our enemies—is a denial of our common humanity. We acknowledge that we have failed to live compassionately and that some have even increased the sum of human misery in the name of religion.

We therefore call upon all men and women ~ to restore compassion to the centre of morality and religion ~ to return to the ancient principle that any interpretation of scripture that breeds violence, hatred or disdain is illegitimate ~ to ensure that youth are given accurate and respectful information about other traditions, religions and cultures ~ to encourage a positive appreciation of cultural and religious diversity ~ to cultivate an informed empathy with the suffering of all human beings—even those regarded as enemies.

We urgently need to make compassion a clear, luminous and dynamic force in our polarized world. Rooted in a principled determination to transcend selfishness, compassion can break down political, dogmatic, ideological and religious boundaries. Born of our deep interdependence, compassion is essential to human relationships and to a fulfilled humanity. It is the path to enlightenment, and indispensable to the creation of a just economy and a peaceful global community.

A kind of interdependence I want to see is that between different progressive movements, those happening right now and those from the past.  Too often, a movement will start up with a lot of energy and passion for justice, but they wind up duplicating efforts of other groups.  But past generations have given us hard-earned, valuable strategy and philosophy.  We need to listen to and incorporate the wisdom of the labor movement, the consciousness raising methods of the  women’s liberation movement; we need to hear  the anti Globalization people from Seattle, the  Trotskyites, the Marxists, the Buddhist activists, Sikunsky about Turtle Island, Arab Spring, the People’s Park Incident, the Port Huron papers, the diggers from California, even the progressive caucus of the U.S. Congress!!

   The Occupy movement needs to understand the IDEAS that all these great people have contributed to. Respect your intellectuals, the philosophers, the theoreticians.  They are doing essential work.  They, and We, will bind together the threads of previous movements, so we can move forward with the accumulated wisdom of previous movements. There’s unity.  There’s interdependence!

The ideas we are working with are based on the governance of the indigenous People of the Mid-Atlantic.  However, if the people were given modern communication technology they ‘would’ (not the best word sorry) use it to expand on the model so that it ‘would’ work globally.  

What would that look like?
Each person (usually working within a group) would be informed of any activity that would affect them - and given the opportunity to express concerns.  Which would need to be resolved before the action moves forward.

a key difference in this and our current paradigm is that the onus of informing all involved is on the initiator of the action.  ‘Should’ (another bad word) they not inform the appropriate parties.  Failure to do so weights against them if concerns are realized after the action completed and a regress is needed.  this is the opposite of our system which rewards secrecy.  

for example: I want to build a tower.  I need to consider anyone in the area who would have to live near this tower or would be affected - the fire dept would be concerned about fire hazards, therefore, i would consider this and take measures to address fire safety, then seek the fire ept’s consent to those preventive measures.

Likewise, i would need to consider people whose view might be blocked by the tower.  

use of social media technology makes it possible to hash tag (or similar tech) to inform the appropriate people on the appropriate level for each action.

What I have taken from the conversation is that our effort should be placed on a more uniformed global economy. We could not come up with any solutions, only statements of how capitalism isn’t equal. My personal statement is that we should focus our efforts on local interdependence and equality... what would this re-imagined system of interdependence affect our lives and well being is certainly uncertain. Interdependence will include all members of the community as we will all be dependant on the well being of each other - looking more outward than inward. Our final conclusion is that we are more then what we have the ability to consume; and my personal conclusion is that we cannot continue on this path of personal consumption without consequences therefore we are or will become interdependent on ourselves and the efforts of each other

Preamble:

We are an interdependent world community. Recognizing we are unique and whole as individuals, yet part of a greater whole as members of human society we seek to create a society that heals the social cancers that so infect our cultures today.  Every piece is essential, every pain is shared, as we are a living organism.  

 Accepting the responsibility as authors of our society:       

-we declare that everyone must have an opportunity to participate.  All voices are heard and considered.  My neighbors’ needs are my needs and my neighbors’ are global;  therefore everyone’s needs must be met in order to thrive as a global society.
