WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: "From Lyric to Lie and Back Again"

Are you a poet who dreams of telling a fictional story, but the words “plotline,” “conflict” and “raise the stakes,” make you want to hide under a blanket?

OR are you a fiction writer who dreams of writing lyrical prose, but the memory of having to scan Shakespeare and recite Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost in junior high makes you want to watch non-stop martial arts movies and play Single Shooter until the cows come home?

This class will play with the borderline between poem and story and see if we can find places where they meet. You might make stories and you might make poems – it’ll always be your choice. BUT you WILL make work, and will come out of this class with pieces that you can send out and/or grow into larger work.

Start date: January 8th, 2017.

All levels welcome. Previous participation not required. All you need is a Facebook account.

Stephanie Barbe Hammer is a professor emerita and award-winning teacher from the University of California, Riverside. Since her retirement in 2013, she has taught at non-profits, writers associations, bookstores, and synagogues. Most recently she was a writer in residence at two small colleges in the People’s Republic of China where she worked with students faculty who spoke very little English. She teaches in realtime and online, and thinks that teachers are the most underappreciated cultural workers in America.
