We are a nonprofit advocate made up of local, independent business owners who use our collective voice and actions to monitor + protect + advocate for the cultural and economic environment in which we live and do business.
NIBA is a stamp of local independence. It is a network that provides a platform to express opinions and challenges, garner the wisdom and knowledge of fellow entrepreneurs and identify your business with the Indie Nash brand.
We believe in collaboration over competition. Community benefits over company benefits. And do not believe in a "pay to play" model where the businesses with the most capital have the loudest voice. We strive to provide a level playing field for all.
The members who will gain the most from joining our efforts are community-minded, independent businesses or organizations who are invested in the long-term health of our city. Those who would like to connect and collaborate with like-minded individuals. And believe in the efficacy of organized collective action with neighbors.
To become a member of Nashville Independent Business Alliance you must meet the following criteria:
1. Locally Owned – 51% of the ownership of the business—the people who have the biggest stake in its success—lives right in the area. They tend to be proactively involved in our community, and keep more of the profits circulating in our local economy. With a few exceptions, publicly traded companies—even those that are headquartered here—are not locally owned. Many regional and national chains making their way to the Nashville area are not locally owned.
2. Independently Operated – Independent owners have full autonomy to make decisions about their business, including sourcing, operations, distribution, marketing, and technology. They are empowered to adopt innovations that align with their personal, community, and environmental values. A locally owned franchise is not fully independent.
3. Locally Operated – Local for us means the Metro Nashville area. Our indie businesses must be located within Metro Nashville. This includes the 13-county Nashville metropolitan area.
