SKILLS ASSESSMENT
Read the case history below. Then answer the following questions using the information provided. Do your best not to supply missing information. You may explain how you would proceed if "a" were true or "b" were true, but do not assume. Make your session-planning thought process as transparent as possible. Show us what you know and how it would inform your work.
CASE HISTORY:
You have been asked to work with a patient who is hospitalized for chemotherapy to treat metastatic ovarian cancer. The patient is 62 years old. She underwent surgery last year wherein "many" of her inguinal & abdominal lymph nodes were removed. Surgery was followed by radiation. Her last bone scan showed extensive pelvic and spinal metastases. Before cancer, she had a history of blood clots (though no issue with clots since diagnosis). She is receiving Heparin while hospitalized. The patient is waiting for results from the lab to determine if she has MRSA.
What are the three key adjustments/adaptations to massage technique would you make to work with this patient? Briefly explain.
Your answer
What is the first thing you will do before you touch the patient? What is the first thing you will do when you are finished working with the patient?
Your answer
What information could we gather from a complete blood count (CBC) that may affect the way we work with this patient? What adjustments might we make as a result of the information we gather?
Your answer
During the session you undrape the patient's leg and notice swelling. What are two possible causes, and how might you respond? Feel free to explain other questions you might ask to better understand and address this situation.
Your answer
What are two pieces of information for which you might look in this patient's medical record/chart? Briefly explain why you want to know each of these pieces of information.
