GSSPA Online Journalism Contest: Individual Categories
Use this form to submit entries into each of the online categories. A school can submit up to SIX entries in each category; the cost per entry is $5. To make the process easier, all entries should be submitted on the same form.

CATEGORIES AND THEIR CORRESPONDING RUBRICS (each will be scored from 1 to 5):

1. MULTIMEDIA PACKAGE -- NEWS:

__ Coverage includes multiple pieces, such as stories, non-reader elements (infographics, charts, timelines, etc.), video clips and audio clips.
__ Coverage goes beyond the surface; it successfully uncovers a specific news story (either a preview of an event, a recap or breaking news) by exploring it in depth and from a variety of angles.
__ Non-story components supplement the text; they serve a distinct purpose and are not present simply for the sake of being present.
__ The coverage makes an impact on the reader and is likely to be something in which the reader devotes time to reading.

2. MULTIMEDIA PACKAGE -- FEATURES:

__ Coverage goes beyond the surface; it successfully uncovers a specific part of school or community life by exploring it in depth and from a variety of angles.

__ The coverage makes an impact on the reader and is likely to be something in which the reader devotes time to reading.

3. MULTIMEDIA PACKAGE -- SPORTS:
__ Coverage includes multiple pieces, such as stories, non-reader elements (infographics, charts, timelines, etc.), video clips and audio clips.
__ Coverage goes beyond the surface; it successfully uncovers a sport (as a feature, preview or recap) by exploring it in depth and from a variety of angles.
__ Non-story components supplement the text; they serve a distinct purpose and are not present simply for the sake of being present.
__ The coverage makes an impact on the reader and is likely to be something in which the reader devotes time to reading.

4. BROADCAST FEATURE:

__ Video successfully uncovers a specific topic in an appropriate amount of time (longer is not necessarily better).
__ Quality of audio and video is clear and understandable; voices are discernable over music and/or background sounds.
__ The video is successfully edited to best inform readers.
__ The video includes close-ups. natural sound and sound bytes.
__ The broadcast goes beyond the surface; in digging deeper, it likely informs readers, in some way, about something they didn’t know about before.

5. BROADCAST NEWS:

__ Video successfully recaps or previews an event.
__ Quality of audio and video is clear and understandable; voices are discernable over music and/or background sounds.
__ The video is successfully edited to best inform readers; the footage is clean.
__ The reporter's voice maintains a clear, appropriate tone.
__ Camera angles help to move the story along in an appropriate way.

6. BROADCAST SPORTS:
__ Video successfully recaps a sporting event or previews one.
__ Quality of audio and video is clear and understandable; voices are discernable over music and/or background sounds
__ Video uses multiple angles to best capture the action of the game or sporting event.
__Interviews with players and others supplement video coverage.

7. PODCAST (submit two or three episodes):
__ Audio quality is clear and free of background sounds that interfere.
__ On-air personalities sound prepared and well-informed.
__ Audio is clean and well-edited.
__ The show seeks to do something significant and successfully accomplishes its goal.

8. BREAKING NEWS STORY:
__ Story addresses something that just happened in a timely -- better yet, immediate -- manner.
__ Story contains relevant sources who shed light on the issue or event.
__ Story contains a photo or other visual to successfully supplement it.

9. BREAKING SPORTS STORY:
__ Story recaps a sporting event that just happened in a timely -- better yet, immediate -- manner.
__ Story contains relevant sources, such as coaches and players, who shed light on the game
__ Story contains a photo or other visual to successfully supplement it.
