This year, an 8th grade student will be chosen to represent the class of 2021 at the 8th grade Closing Ceremony. The student speaker’s speech represents the entire 8th grade and reflects on their years in Middle School. This speech represents the culmination of the Middle School experience.

If you would like to deliver this year’s speech, here is what you need to do:

Compose a speech that you think represents our 8th grade and your collective years in Middle School.

Share this speech with your advisor by 8:20 a.m. Tuesday 5/9. Your advisor will read through your speech and give you feedback.

Make any changes your advisor recommends.

Practice your speech so you feel confident and comfortable.

Audition. You will give your speech to a panel of teachers who will choose the speaker.

The date for auditions is 3:20 p.m. Tuesday 5/16 in Dr. Walczak's room. This is the only audition time.

If you would like to pursue this opportunity, you should begin working with your advisor right away. If you have any questions, feel free to ask your advisor.

As you know, we have an author, Allison McGhee, visiting today from 2-3 PM. She will be leading a writer’s workshop in the MS Library. She has asked that you bring a notebook and a writing instrument. You will be sitting on the floor, so it would be helpful if you also bring a binder to use as a writing surface.

Today, all 8th graders need to come to ENGLISH. Whether you have History or English today, you'll be in English.

If you're a switch student, switch classes to make sure you come to ENGLISH today. Don't go to your other class that you switch into; come to English instead.

If you have any questions, find Doc.

Everyone should bring their copy of To Kill a Mockingbird to English.

One of the most serious and meaningful moments of our trip to D.C. will take place on Friday morning, April 28. Four members of the 8th grade class will present a University School wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The Tomb represents the sacrifice made by all American men and women in military conflicts throughout our history. You have the opportunity to select the members of the Class of 2021 whom you feel best represent the 8th grade, University School, and the Common Trust. You should select two female students and two male students by checking two boxes each for male and female students. This is an individual decision.

The Upper School French Club will be selling crepes during lunch on Wednesday this week. The money raised in French Club, mostly from the crêpe sale, goes towards sponsoring two Haitian children’s educations. Crêpes will be $2 with bananas, strawberries, chocolate, and whipped cream as choices of toppings. Please support French Club and remember to bring money.”

The results of the energy competition are finally in! The Lower school won the grand prize by reducing their energy use by 8.7 percent. The Middle school also did very well by reducing their energy use by 5.3 percent. The Upper school finished in last with an energy reduction of 1.2 percent. Thank you to everyone who worked hard during the month of February to lessen the USM community’s impact on the environment!
