The committee is comprised of 7-10 community members and 4 students (2 juniors and 2 seniors) with students being full and equal voting members. Qualifications for student members of the committee include a desire to participate in group discussions during application reviews, and a willingness to share and represent a student perspective regarding the grant initiatives. Student membership is a two-year commitment (junior and senior year), with three meetings in October for the first grant cycle, three meetings in March for the second cycle, some additional time in between meetings for the review of applications, and for occasional follow-up with grant applicants. Committee meetings are historically Monday or Tuesday evenings from 7PM until 9PM.
Participation in the F51 Grants Committee provides students with an opportunity to contribute to the community, to learn about and participate in a grants process, and to make a difference in the lives of the students within the district. The process of reviewing grant applications offers students the opportunity to acquire and practice effective skills in communication, consensus building, critical thinking, and decision making.
