Nominations for Honorary Degrees
The awarding of honorary degrees is a way of promoting and advancing the University as a whole, and giving the University prominence and recognition among her publics. For this reason, honorary degrees are most often awarded to individuals who represent the institution as a whole. It is also important to keep in mind that as a university in the Jesuit tradition, Fordham continually asks members of her community to grow in personal and social values and to judge and be judged on high standards. Honorary degree recipients exemplify those values and standards.
Past recipients have been honored for qualities and achievements including:
-Leadership in advancing the mission of Catholic higher education;
-Excellence in education and specifically in the areas represented by the University’s undergraduate colleges and graduate and professional schools;
-Contributions to furthering multicultural and international understanding;
-Service to Fordham University;
-Service to New York City and her communities;
-Contributions to our nation and society that advance humanistic values.
