2014-2015 ASB- Site Leader Application

Mission: Alternative Spring Breaks engage students in important social issues through service trips, education, and reflection. Alternative Spring Breaks aim to develop a community of active and engaged citizens who are committed to positive sustainable change.

Site Leader Position Description: This application is for Alternative Spring Break 2014-2015. This is a VOLUNTEER position that will provide invaluable leadership training, experience and skills that can be used on your resume and for bragging rights.

Site Leader Executive Board (5 students)

• Breaker fee refunded for site leaders if all responsibilities are fulfilled, including meeting fundraising goals
• Inspire others to become an active citizen
Responsibilities:
• Manage a budget of approximately $3,000 per site, excluding fundraised dollars
• Work with Break Away, the national alternative break organization
• Attend mandatory retreat and training, weekly meetings, and student Q & A Sessions, Site Reveal, Orientation and Pre-trip meeting
• Assist in selecting and/or securing ASB site themes, locations and lodging
• Assist in selecting pre/post ASB site locations for pre/post service projects centered around site theme
• Attend FAU Day of Service & MLK Day of Service along with all Breakers
• Establish relationships with community partners at respective sites for pre-, during, and post-ASB trips
• Advertise and advocate for the program to students and faculty
• Assist in selection of Breakers for 2015 and site leaders for 2016, including reviewing Breaker applications and interviewing Breakers
• Train Breakers in Alternative Break basics – active citizenship, the triangle, reflection
• Train Breakers on the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership defined from Kouzes and Posner’s The Leadership Challenge
• Complete driver certification through a driving background check
• Complete student travel forms and other relevant paperwork
• Plan fundraising events for each site to assist Breakers in paying participant fees
• Communicate with community partners and lodging locations regularly throughout year
• Plan meetings for Breakers prior to the trip
• Plan educational materials based on site theme prior to and during the trip
• Plan reflection prior to, during, and after the trip
• Any other relevant logistics
Time Commitment: 3-9 hours per week for one year
Preferred skills: Commitment to and passion for ASB, organization, innovative, ability to meet deadlines, vision for the program, enthusiasm, good communication skills and good judgment, ability to communicate with community agencies, flexibility, and willingness to work with a diverse range of students and communities

Eligibility Requirements:
• Former ASB or FIT participant
• Enrolled FAU student during Fall 2014 and Spring 2015
• Attend ALL mandatory meetings and activities
• In good Academic and Conduct standing prior to and throughout the program, including maintaining a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher

    Alternative Spring Break Executive Board Responsibilities & Expectations Acknowledgement

    If selected to be on the Alternative Spring Break Executive Board as a Site Leader, I understand that I must fulfill the following requirement: 1.) Commit to the position for one full year and the responsibilities listed on page 2. 2.) Provide breaker participation fee within one week of site leader training; fee amount to be determined based on location and will be refunded after ASB 2015 reorientation if all responsibilities are fulfilled. Fee ranges from $100 - $250. 3.) Attend Alternative Spring Break 2015. 4.) Attend the Site Leader Executive Board retreat and training. 5.) Attend all Site Leader and Breaker meetings including but not limited to Student Q&A Sessions, Site Reveal, Orientation and Pre-Trip Meeting. 6.) Adhere to all ASB rules and procedures, and promote the strict no drug and no alcohol policy during all ASB events and programs. 7.)Stay in good Academic and Conduct standing prior to and throughout the position, including maintaining a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher. I understand that my failure to meet these expectations may result in my removal from the Alternative Spring Break Executive Board.
