To the City of Ithaca's Common Council: To Bring a Council Meeting to Cornell University’s Campus
In accordance with our mission of serving as a bridge between the Cornell and Ithaca communities, the City and Local Affairs Committee (CiLo) of the Cornell Student Assembly hopes to bring a Common Council meeting to the University’s campus.
According to Article III Section C29 of the City Code: “The Common Council shall meet on the first day of January after the election at the regular place of meeting of the Common Council for the previous year, and thereafter it shall meet at such place as it may choose, within or without the territorial limits of the City but in reasonable proximity thereto, and at times hereinafter provided.”
Therefore, since there are no legal barriers to bringing a meeting of Ithaca’s Common Council to Cornell’s campus and
Whereas students, faculty and staff comprise a considerable portion of the City of Ithaca and
Whereas students make up a distinct class of constituents that are often undereducated and underrepresented in regards to the City’s policy and
Whereas CiLo believes that by bringing Common Council and local Ithaca residents to Cornell’s campus we will be able to promote a sense of a unified, shared community with an emphasis on encouraging collaboration among these groups and
Whereas if Common Council agrees to come to campus CiLo will take up the responsibility of informing the public both on and off campus about the meeting’s change in location and reasoning behind it
