App idea: One-stop dashboard for emergency info: aquifer levels in the city, electricity alerts, burn bans, road closures.
App idea: See food inspection data on various restaurants. Possibly feed into Yelp, other services.
Group #2:
App idea: Calendar in cloud
- Push notifications to let people know what’s going on around the city
- Filter calendar to show if it’s a family event, concert, etc.
- Lightweight, simple, limited scope
- Also, option to open up 311 report and provide response to event-related issues\
App idea: Open Budget
- Open up the budget data to show what the city is spending in certain areas
- Have a slider showing what happens if change budget areas
- i.e. If you spend less on education, X number of schools will be closed
- Benchmark San Antonio against other cities across the country.
- i.e. See how much San Antonio spends on police per capita vs. similar cities
Group #3:
Inventoried open data in the city on the OKFN dashboard. Found out there is a lot of data in the city but there isn’t a lot published out for use. Opened eyes of IT dept about.
App idea: Local Wiki
- Create local wiki.
- Something anyone can contribute to.
App idea: San Antonio answers website.
- Beta: take the top 10 frequently asked questions from all 34 city departments.
- Create a protocol/style sheet for responding to questions
- Have brigade come in and do an “answer-a-thon” to answer questions.
- Show success, then perhaps get more resources for city to support it internally.
