GBP154885-7 Cranwood StreetLondonEC1V 9LHUNITED KINGDOM2012-07-18122013-07-17CAMEROONCMA grant of £15,488 to carry out a digital mapping project aimed at improving service delivery and political participation among young Cameroonians. Working with approximately 450 young people across three districts (Okola, Ndop and Pitoa), the project has five distinct stages: The first step is to gather the young mappers together to decide on the top priority or challenge facing their community. In previous projects, health, education and sanitation have all been identified as key challenges, although it's entirely possible that the three districts may identify another issue(s). With appropriate training from Plan Cameroon and their partners, the mapping groups will go out into their communities to collect qualitative and quantitative data related to the issue identified in the first stage and using GPS units provided by Plan. This information will then be mapped on to base maps of the region prepared during an earlier digital mapping project. Once ready, the maps will be shared on- and offline with as many people from the local community as possible. Given the relatively low level of internet access in these communities, offline sharing of the maps will be key to the project's wider success. Local councillors will be trained in how to read and interpret the maps. By involving local councils, Plan hope that they will be able to ensure the long-term survival of this project, especially as local councils in Cameroon now have the responsibility for maintaining digital maps of their areas. Using social accountability tools, the youth groups will collect key information on what their communities think of the services being provided by the local council and others. This will help to identify gaps in service provision and issues relating to the quality of those services. The mappers, community leaders and key government partners will also be offered training in good governance, participation and accountability. Young people will be given training in advocacy and how to work with their local service providers to demand better resource allocation and service provision. If successful, Plan are hopeful that this model of service provision mapping will be adopted by other regions and potentially other countries. Given Plan's extensive advocacy experience and excellent local network, we're hopeful that this could become reality over the next few years.http://plan-international.org/where-we-work/africa/cameroon/2014-02-26

Farmerline provides access to agriculture information, communications expertise and advisory services for smallholder farmers and other agricultural stakeholders. Through their activities, Farmerline aim to grow smallholder farm management and production capacity, contribute to improving processes, encourage new skills acquisition, and build local and regional knowledge bases and relationships. To test this, they will be deploying a six-month pilot programme aimed at reaching 500 fish farmers (or one twelfth of Ghana's fish farming population). Farmers will be provided with aquaculture best practice information, advice on record keeping, access to input suppliers and market access information in an attempt to bolster their productivity and incomes. PeaceTXT is built on a violence interruption approach that has been used from Baltimore to Baghdad and has been proven to work through rigorous randomised control trials. PeaceTXT aims to use SMS to scale this model of violence interruption so that it can reach more people and, hopefully, help prevent another devastating outbreak of post-election violence. Targeted SMS will combine with intensive on-the-ground work by SNA-K's existing peacebuilders and community leaders to target potential flashpoints of violence to de-escalate tensions and reduce the potential for conflict. SNA-K already has an impressive database of some 30,000 Kenyans who have signed up to receive civic education and violence reduction messages that they can pass on to their friends, families and neighbours. This grant will pay for a series of improvements to the SMS platform. These improvements will allow SNA-K staff to search and filter incoming texts by location, age of sender or other demographic information. That way, SNA-K staff will be able to target interventions depending on where they are most needed or to tailor messages to certain groups, such as young unemployed males. The added functionality will also allow staff to export data for offline access, to send SMS to multiple groups without sending the same message to the same person more than once (if they are members of more than one group) and intelligent filtering and automatic replies.http://poptech.org/peacetxt2014-02-26

GBP10000Ngong RoadNairobiKENYA2012-07-30122013-07-29KENYAKEThis grant will be used to accelerate the on-going snapshot research study on ICT Hubs/Labs around Africa (AfriLabs and others). The objective of the study is to understand the models of the Hubs/Labs, its entrepreneurs and the sustainable impact of these Hubs/Labs in spurring innovations that improve livelihoods. iHub Research are continuing to look for more avenues for financial help to accelerate the research study. The goal is to collaborate with these Hubs/Labs in the long term in order to iterate and conduct phased studies as their models keep changing and evolving. In addition, iHub hope to generate findings that can help the hubs learn from each other through collaborative efforts that will benefit their members for successful implementation plan. The ICT Hubs have also created opportunities for young people with high tech skills such as software engineering, design, and development. Many of these skills are being nurtured in the Information Communication (ICT) hubs, where technology-oriented individuals gather and collaborate. However, little inquiry has been done to understand the various ICT Hub models developing all over Africa, and how such factors influence the entrepreneurs and the sustainability of the spaces. iHub Research aims to fill this dearth of information. The scope of the study is 15 Hubs. The first ICT Hub of the 15 hubs to be profiled within this study series was iHub, Nairobi's innovation Hub for the Technology Community. The second Hub that forms part of the study is Hive Colab in Uganda. Each Hub that forms part of this study, will take approximately 2-3 months to complete the overall snapshot study. This will involve a phased out process of data collection, analysis and reporting each Hub/Lab at a time. Thereafter, the snapshot studies will be aggregated to a final report that will draw the findings of all the 15 Hubs/Labs. Before the release of the final report of all the Hubs, constant follow ups and feedback will be made to continuously amend any major changes before publishing the combined report that will summarize the key findings, unique similarities and differences and how/what the Hubs/Labs can learn from each other. iHub Research welcomes the collaboration of the other Hubs/Labs around Africa to join and be part of this study in order to generate an ecosystem of joint collaboration and learn from each other. Partnerships between ICT Hubs can play a key role in enhancing real growth and success to the entrepreneurs as they provide a conduit for the spillover of knowledge from one Hub to another. Knowledge is created and transformed into innovative activity, which enhances the competitiveness of an industry and a country's economy to grow very fast.http://www.research.ihub.co.ke/pages/home.php2014-02-26

GBP1450030 Main StreetDanburyUNITED STATES OF AMERICA2013-01-20122014-01-19KENYAKEThe aim of the project is to make the most popular Wikipedia medical articles (on issues like HIV and polio) available in as many languages as possible. First, existing English language medical content is proofed and improved by Wikipedia's medical team. Then, after publication in a peer-review journal, the content is translated into simplified English. At the same time, this content will be translated into multiple languages mainly by TWB's vast community of volunteer translators. Some languages, however, cannot sustain a volunteer community of translators. And that's how Indigo became involved. TWB has recently opened a translator training centre in Nairobi and the job of translating this English content into Swahili will be done by the translators at the centre. 12 translators will work on the translations, while simultaneously gaining access to computing facilities, memory translation software and other resources and skills that will improve their employability. The finished translations are then proofed and uploaded onto the Swahili version of Wikipedia, which currently has approximately 25,000 articles. Once on Wikipedia, the content will then be marketed to NGOs, community health workers and others.http://translatorswithoutborders.org/2014-02-26

Based in Pretoria, Kopano is a project that creates mutual support networks that use SMS to connect HIV+ mothers to one another, enabling them to share experiences, fears and doubts and to ask questions of the health professionals or mentors that are on hand to provide expert advice and reassurance. The first part of Indigo's grant will be used to allow SHM to develop a mobile/online training tool detailing how to go about setting up SMS support groups, so that communities across South Africa - or indeed anywhere else - will be able to establish their own groups for HIV+ mothers. The development of the training tool is critical if SHM Foundation are to build on the fantastic results shown in their pilot studies. The tool will provide: Access to the most up to date and accurate information on how to provide social support to pregnant women living with HIV/AIDS. An understanding of the current issues and concerns affecting pregnant women living with HIV/AIDS, particularly in their local communities. Advice on how best to provide social and medical support using the medium of SMS. The second part of the grant will be used to develop a Myth Buster application. One of the findings of the Foundation was that there were a lot of myths and uncertainties surrounding HIV and pregnancy. The Myth Buster would allow women to text in a query to a dedicated number and have it answered straight away. Using funding of £15,000 from us, they will be developing the openAFRICA project, a digital management toolkit for journalists and activists that facilitates FOI requests, combined with a semantic document repository. To do this it will pair Alaveteli (software developed by mySociety to allow public FOI requests) with DocumentCloud (which €˜reads' documents to pick out the people, places and organisations mentioned within them). openAFRICA will offer citizens a streamlined, user-friendly portal for submitting questions to government. Stitching together best-of-class technology platforms, it will merge Avaleteli's public interface with the DocumentCloud repository. This will allow journalists and others to conduct advanced forensic research on data released by government, including entity extraction and analysis as it runs information through OpenCalais. Making these two platforms interoperable will make them significantly more powerful, globally. openAFRICA will then build new functionalities on the user interface, by creating a community or €˜social layer' so citizens can actively curate collections of documents, and build communities interested around themes/topics/documents. This social layer will also be used to raise awareness and directly advance the cause of increasing the number of requests made.http://askafrica.info/2014-02-26

As a regular user of the WordPress platform, it's easy to see the advantages it offers. Not only is it quick and easy to use, but it will allow national organisations to quickly and easily publish articles, news stories and reports on human rights issues without requiring any advanced training in complex content management systems. The funding that Indigo is providing will enable WAHRDN to train up staff on how to use the WordPress platform, as well as the initial set-up costs associated with each site. Part of the funds will also be used to enable human rights defenders to conduct research, analysis and investigations into human rights issues, which they can publicise and promote via their blogs.http://westafricadefenders.org/en/2014-02-26

The aim of the new DIY project is to provide major transparency NGOs, as well as smaller NGOs, concerned citizens, software engineers and others with advice and assistance on setting up transparency websites similar to those already created by the mySociety team. The project was borne of the realisation that they could not possibly reach out across the globe to all those organisations and individuals eager to replicate and adapt solutions already created by the mySociety team. Working across Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America and Africa, the project will use face-to-face events to increase awareness of the organisation's work, build and strengthen networks and assist those trying to develop digital transparency initiatives. In addition, the mySociety team will develop a new website to support replication of their sites by organisations and individuals it is unable to reach face-to-face. The new site will feature advice and guidance on setting up digital transparency tools for organisations across the globe. Covering issues such as site design, data acquisition and media relations, the news DIY mySociety site will be a one-stop shop for digital transparency organisations.http://diy.mysociety.org/2014-02-26

By working with several major academic publishers, IADP is able to provide heavily subsidised materials for a wide range of academic disciplines. In addition, through collaborating with less well endowed colleges and universities, IADP is attempting to build Communities of Practice (CoPs) so that resources can more easily be peer reviewed, and OER can be developed, adapted, and shared. GBP1600017-25 New Inn YardLondonEC2A 3EAUNITED KINGDOM2012-03-14122013-03-13UNITED KINGDOMGBWorking in conjunction with Amnesty International UK and Amnesty International Kenya, we have awarded a grant of £16,000 to help them build a mapping website that will capture information about forced evictions of slum residents in Nairobi. It will be the first platform of its kind in Kenya and it's hoped that the information collected will allow Amnesty to get a clearer overview of the scale of the problem and provide a compelling tool with which to lobby the Kenyan Government. The project will use rapid response activists from slum communities to document and verify reports of forced evictions. These volunteer activists will be trained in how to use mobiles to collect data, testimonies, photos and video and how to submit them to the website. All of the evidence they collect will then be verified by site administrators to confirm its accuracy and detail before being uploaded to the site. In addition to the site, Amnesty are also working with slum residents on mobilisation activities to increase their awareness of housing rights and to build their capacity to hold the authorities to account. As well as documenting (potential) incidents of forced evictions, this project will also benefit from Amnesty's much larger Urgent Action network, to the 250,000 supporters subscribed to their e-communications programme and to their social media followers. As an organisation with an impressive track record of mobilising support around the globe, we're particularly hopeful that this project will be able to build a groundswell of discontent - both within Kenya and internationally - to shed light on an endemic problem affecting millions of peoplehttp://www.amnesty.org.uk/2014-02-26

GBP14920Pembroke PlaceLiverpoolL3 5QAUNITED KINGDOM2012-04-18122013-04-17UNITED KINGDOMTZIndigo have provided a grant of £14,920 to Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine to help them build, develop and deploy the SMS referral system. Working in the Mwanza region, the system aims to improve communication between informal village drug stores and local health centres and dispensaries. When a young person turns up at a drug store seeking reproductive or sexual health services, an SMS will be sent to the local health centre or dispensary with details of the service to be provided. A unique passcode will then be sent automatically to the drug store owner for them to pass on to the client. When the client presents this referral code at the health centre or dispensary, they receive a confidential, fast-track service. A text message is then sent by the health centre or dispensary to the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR). This SMS contains patient data (age, gender and medical condition), as well as information on the medical procedure or treatment provided. NIMR and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine can then use this data and compare it with data collected in a control community which doesn't have the SMS referral system.http://www.inthec.org/index.htm2014-02-26
