PREP Project Goal
Increase the number of Science and Mathematics majors by offering at-risk precalculus students skills, habits, knowledge, understanding, and all tools needed to succeed in the math they will need to pursue their intended major in the sciences.

This program was developed through funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to help address the critical problem of shortage of STEM majors. Through past experience, we have identified three factors that support and retain students beginning their studies in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields:
1. Confidence and success in mathematics
2. Having practical, hands-on experience demonstrating and/or applying scientific principles.
3. Gratification in knowing that their work can go beyond themselves and truly help others.

The PREP intervention was developed in response to the 49.5% of precalculus students who are not successful each semester at Cabrillo. PREP participants are all hoping to pursue a major in science, engineering or math, and this program teaches them the tools they will need to succeed in precalculus, calculus and beyond.

The PREP TAs also learn a lot about effective tutoring and teaching. It is an amazing opportunity to sharpen your math skills, too!

TA Responsibilities:
(1) TA Meet-up, Friday of Finals week, May 19, 2017. (2) A half-day training before the program begins, Friday August 4, 2017. (3) Intensive work as a peer tutor and mentor with the PREP students, involving 40-50 hours during the 2-week (10-day) PREP intensive (M-F, 8/7-8/18). (4) During the Fall 2017 semester, TAs will work every Friday morning 8:30 - 11:30am. (5) PREP/M4 Fall 2017 section preference for sit-in assignment.

There will also be opportunities to work one-on-one with selected students. In addition, TAs will be responsible to give presentations in Study Skills topics and in math topics at the level of intermediate algebra to the PREP cohort during the 2-week intensive and (possibly) during the Fall 2017 semester Friday sessions.

(1) TA Meet-up, Friday of Finals Week, May 19, 2017 - 9:30-10:30am *
(2) Half-day Training: I understand that if I am chosen as a PREP TA I can commit to participating in a 4-hour training, the Friday before the 2-week intensive; August 4th, 2017, from 1-5pm. *
(3) PREP Intensive: I understand that if I am chosen as a PREP TA I will be participating in the 2-week intensive that begins 3 weeks before the first day of Fall 2017 semester classes. *
Intensive Dates: (Week 1) Mon 8/7 - Fri 8/11 and (Week 2) Mon 8/14 - Fri 8/18; daily from 8:00am - 1:30pm
(4) PREP Fall 2017 Fridays: I understand that if I am chosen as a PREP TA I will be participating in the PREP group meeting/workshop every Friday from 8:30-11:30 during the Fall 2017 semester. *
(5) PREP M4 Fall 2017 - Sections Dates and Times: I understand that if I am chosen as a PREP TA I will be sitting-in on 1 of 2 M4 class that will include our Fall 2017 PREP students. Upon acceptance as a PREP TA we will discuss which TAs will be sitting-in on which classes. Please answer the question to the best of your ability. *
This is a student assistant position with a $13.25/hr rate.
