How long have you been a School Board Trustee? What inspired you to become a Trustee?

I have been a Trustee for seven years. In that time, I have served as the Board Clerk and I am currently serving as the Board President. I also represent you and our district on the City of Atascadero/ Atascadero Schools Committee. It is a committee where AUSD and the city work together and discuss shared areas of interest. I also represent you and our district as a member of the San Luis Obispo County Office of Education County Committee on School District Organization. I was inspired to become a Trustee by concerned parents and community members who knew of my involvement, passion and commitment to our City and Schools over the last 30 years.

What is the other job you have outside the Trustee duties?

I am an Enrolled Agent, licensed by the Internal Revenue Service, a Registered Representative and a Certified Fiduciary. I am the principal owner of Ray M. Buban, EA Financial & Tax Service. What is your favorite element of the AUSD Graduate Profile?

My favorite element is “College and Career Ready”: I have seen and experienced, (through my son) the results of how fantastic the education is in Atascadero. The quality of education in our district, based on my more than 30 years of experience with the district, is remarkable. The quality of our teachers has never wavered; I get filled with pride when I learn how our graduates do after graduation. They have attended or are currently attending: Harvard, Baylor, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Vassar, Cuesta, Cal Poly SLO, Whittier, Columbia, M.I.T., Cal Lutheran, UC Davis, USC, UCLA, Fresno State, University of Arizona, Arizona State and Duke just to name a few. They are or have attended college on scholarship for academics as well as sports. Our graduates are self-employed business owners, doctors, lawyers, accountants, rocket scientists, Navy, Army, Marines, Air Force, police officers, firefighters, farmers, ranchers, bankers, Mayors, Assemblymen, PhD’s, teachers and Principals, you name it our graduates do it. WOW !!!! " We are ATASCADERO and they are NOT"……

How long have you been a School Board Trustee? What inspired you to become a Trustee?

I was elected to the board in November of 2014. I was born and raised in Atascadero and attended Atascadero schools, as did my parents, and my children. My experiences as a student and parent in the district ultimately led to my decision to run for the board. I believe that we have the best administrators, teachers, staff, and students. Hands down! Growing up in Atascadero was amazing and almost perfect. I am proud to be giving back to a community that has given me and my family so much.

What is the other job you have outside the Trustee duties? I own Rocky Canyon Kennels in Atascadero. I am blessed to have the best job, DOGS! I am also secretary for Aaron Mills Construction Inc.

What hobbies do you have? I had an amazing instructor for clothing construction at AHS in the 1990's. This led to a life long love of sewing and clothing construction. When my 4 children were young I made all of their clothes. I am now doing costumes for the annual fundraiser Dancing With Our Stars. I also love to cook and bake. My uncle had a restaurant where I learned to cook. I trained in Hawaiian Kempo and Muy Thai kickboxing for 15 years. Having been an athlete most of my life, I love being active and outdoors.

How do you create work/life balance? This is very tricky for me and a struggle. I have a business that boards dogs 24 hours a day 7 days a week. I have to have my phone on me, I have to be able to leave if needed. I have learned that when I am home I need to be home. No work distractions, unless it is an emergency. There will be emergencies, but when I am home with the family no work email, texts etc.

What is your favorite element of the AUSD Graduate Profile? Self-Directed Individual.

They value learning as a life long skill. Teaching young minds how to learn so they can continue to for the rest of their lives is amazing to me. Our students can do anything that they want to do. Students from AUSD are encouraged and challenged to take responsibility and ownership for their learning. I am so proud of our Graduate Profile.

Donn Clickard - AUSD School Board Trustee

How long have you been a School Board Trustee? What inspired you to become a Trustee? Being a School Board Trustee is the most important elected position in this country. There is no greater charge that the responsibility of preparing our children to become responsible, successful and contributing citizens. The decision to seek to become a trustee seemed the logical continuation of life, after thirty four years as a teacher, coach and athletic director. The twelve years spent as a trustee has provided the opportunity to contribute to the community in a positive and constructive way. The inspiration to continue this responsibility comes from participating in the constant improvement in the education programs in our District.

What is the other job you have outside the Trustee duties? The Atascadero Greyhound Foundation provides the opportunity to continue to serve the community of Atascadero and it’s citizens. As Executive Director I have the opportunity to make sure that we meet our goals and follow our mission, which is “doing what is best for kids”.

What hobbies do you have? A productive vegetable garden, a full travel schedule, and a well maintained property.

How do you create work/life balance? Make sure that work is important and satisfying and is balanced with a constructive use of leisure time and keeping family first.

What is your favorite element of the AUSD Graduate Profile? All of the elements are extremely important in preparing our students to deal with the problems life presents and the opportunities life creates. The career port of “college and career ready” is extremely important because not all of our students will go on to college or university. We need to make sure that our graduates are prepared to be successful in a workplace environment at age eighteen. The district does that by establishing pathways in Career and Technical education that helps to develop career ready graduates.

Terri Switzer- AUSD School Board Trustee

How long have you been a School Board Trustee? What inspired you to become a Trustee?

I have been a trustee for Atascadero Unified for 15 years now. My three daughters were in school and involved with a handful of extracurricular activities at the time when I first decided to run for office. I had been involved with them all throughout their time in school - helping out in the classrooms, being a room mom, and being involved in boosters.

What is the other job you have outside the Trustee duties?

My husband and I started our own business, Switzer Diesel Repair, 37 years ago. I have managed the books for the business since we started. When my children were small I ran our office out of our house so that I could keep my schedule flexible so as to be a parent volunteer. Our family was very involved in 4-H and FFA while the girls were growing up. When the girls were in high school, they did a lot of competitive public speaking, as well as livestock judging and showing - that took up almost all of our weekends.

What hobbies do you have?

Since my children have all graduated, I've found some spare time and started spending it on our pontoon boat, camping, and enjoying the great outdoors. I now have 4 grandchildren who rule my world and I would not have it any other way!

How do you create work/life balance?

Life has slowed down a bit, which I love - I am able to spend time with my family and enjoy the grandkids. My daughter works for us, which allows us to break away from the shop and go out and play a little more these days.

What is your favorite element of the AUSD Graduate Profile?

I love the graduate profile. My favorite part of the profile is "College and Career Ready Scholar" and "Responsible and Contributing Citizens". Not every child is going off to college - but we want our kids to work hard, be responsible, and do their best to be well rounded citizens.

Tami Gunther - AUSD School Board Trustee

How long have you been a School Board Trustee? What inspired you to become a Trustee?

There was not one single thing that inspired me to run, but rather a long series of events and activities. I started as a PTA room-mom, then joined the School Site Council at Santa Margarita Elementary. That led to the District Advisory Committee, and SSC at the Junior High and High School. I began attending Board meetings and eventually, with lots of encouragement, decided to run. I have been a member of the Board of Trustees for 11 years, and still look forward to every meeting!

What is the other job you have outside the Trustee duties?

I've been a bookkeeper for my entire adult life, but while my kids were growing up my main job was being their mom. My husband's job required him to be away a lot, so I've been really lucky to have had a flexible schedule that allowed me to be home with my kids.

What hobbies do you have?

My favorite way to spend extra time is with my family and friends. I enjoy cooking and having people over for dinner anytime we can. My husband and I have been able to travel a bit more since our kids are now grown. We try to visit our former exchange student and her family, who have become a part of our family, in Italy at least once a year. During quiet time I enjoy crocheting.

How do you create work/life balance?

Family is always first, but most of my time without family is spent on education related work of one kind or another. As a member of the California School Boards Association Board of Directors, I travel to Sacramento six to eight times a year. I'm also on the Board of Directors for the Tri-County Education Coalition which meets in Goleta three or four times a year, and requires quite a bit of planning time. I do my best to be home when my husband is home, and time with our daughters is always a priority.

What is your favorite element of the AUSD Graduate Profile?

All of the elements of the Graduate Profile work together to create a whole person, but if I had to choose a favorite element, it would probably be "Responsible and Contributing Citizen". If a student is successful in all the other aspects of the Graduate Profile, they will have the tools to become a "Responsible and Contributing Citizen". No matter what path they choose, being a responsible citizen, caring about their community, and contributing to make their home, community and the world a better place is the key to real happiness, and the ultimate success in life.

George Shoemaker - AUSD School Board Trustee

How long have you been a School Board Trustee? What inspired you to become a Trustee? I was appointed to the school board in April of this year after the resignation of George Dodge. My interest in becoming a school board member comes from my long interest in education (I was a high school teacher for 15 years) and my background in public policy. My two youngest children are in the Atascadero school system, at the high school and middle school, and I see my role as an advocate for all children. I am a strong believer in serving our community as I see our local community being the backbone of a civil society.

What is the other job you have outside the Trustee duties? Outside of the job of board member I am a wine grape grower, managing and working my own vineyard for the past eleven years. I also manage my own commercial properties.

What hobbies do you have? My hobbies include hiking, cooking, gardening (my latest venture is with aquaponics), coaching youth sports (baseball, basketball, and track), but mostly spending time with my family. Anyone who knows me also knows that I am a project guy that always has something that I am working on.

How do you create work/life balance? Since I mostly set my own schedule working, I make time for my family and for myself. I also try to have my children work with me when their busy schedules allow. Being involved in my children’s sports when I can also allows me to spend more time with them.

What is your favorite element of the AUSD Graduate Profile? My favorite element of the AUSD Graduate Profile is Critical Thinker. From my experience in education, and as a parent, I have seen the growing need for critical thinking skills. We live in a world that is rapidly changing in so many ways; from technology to social interaction to ever changing job skills. Being a critical thinker allows our students to be able to change and adapt to the fast paced world we live in. It also provides them the ability to think through problems and be creative with solutions to those problems.

Corinne Kuhnle- AUSD School Board Trustee

How long have you been a School Board Trustee? What inspired you to become a Trustee?

I have proudly served on the Atascadero Unified School Board for seventeen years. My journey began when I was president of the Carrisa Plains School PTF. Dan Mosunich noticed my interest in education and asked if I would like to participate on the Strategic Planning Team. I have been hooked ever since! My greatest inspiration to serve as a board member is our students! I have witnessed their growth and success magnified when we as a district work together. Mutual respect and teamwork are two key ingredients that I believe have helped propel our district to #1.

What is the other job you have outside the Trustee duties?

I work at a neighboring ranch in Carrisa Plains with their bookwork and olive mill business. When I’m home I help my husband Randy with his personal business and lend a helping hand with our grandchildren when needed.

What hobbies do you have?

I love working in my garden, baking for our family gatherings and exploring the countryside in my John Deere Gator!

How do you create work/life balance?

In order to be my best and maintain balance in my life, I keep family as my top priority; followed by work. When I see my family thriving because of a good meal, helpful conversations, a game of Pedro or just bear hugs coming and going, life is good! By maintaining this balance, I am stronger and better equipped for my responsibilities at work.

What is your favorite element of the AUSD Graduate Profile?

Critical Thinker, Effective Communicator, Teammate, Self-Directed Individual, College and Career Ready Scholar, Responsible and Contributing Citizen. These are all skills, tools and attributes we have strived to equip our students with to be well rounded graduates and self-sustaining adults. In the last element, we ask our graduates to display integrity. A quality I believe will enhance ALL the elements of the AUSD Graduate Profile.
