ACE and the Alta Ski Patrol have partnered to offer a grant in memory of Bill Lennon and his outsized legacy. The WEXL grant is given in recognition of Bill's many accomplishments and the inspiration he provided to the Alta community. Bill helped establish ACE (Alta Community Enrichment) in 1995; he was a stalwart member of the Alta Ski Patrol from 1980 to 2006, and served as a gadfly on the Alta Town Council for many years. He was the consummate entrepreneur, not afraid to start a new offbeat enterprise. His ventures included “The Great White Hunter” (ski finder service), “Beater Cords” (cords attached to your skis for powder falls), the power plant in lower Little Cottonwood, and a hand washing station for firefighters. He was a masseuse, a mountain biker, a kayaker, and a handball and tennis player. He was fun-loving and ruthlessly honest, thoughtful and obstinate, crazy and cutting, funny and overbearing, and at times, deeply profound. He would offer up a mind-bending morsel that would knock around in an individual’s head for years. He was good with his hands (Bill and Ellza built a house in Alta), generous with his heart and with his time, and a great supporter of our Alta community. All of the members on the selection committee were drawn to him, miss him, and hope by these grants to encourage his wild spirit and wide view. We are lucky to have known him.
The object of these grants is to encourage those who embody his legacy of thinking alternatively and creatively. The grants will provide two community members, in need of assistance, to pursue an endeavor that will (a) enhance themselves as entrepreneurs and (b) contribute to the Little Cottonwood Canyon community.
Total grant funds awarded each year will be $1,500. Two grantees will be awarded - $1,000 and $500. However, the committee retains flexibility regarding the size of the annual grants, depending on the quality of applicants and the funding from year-to-year.
