All Ph.D. students must have an Outside Examiner present at their Comprehensive Oral Exams and Dissertation Defense. The outside examiner must be from a different department than the student and the advisory committee chair. This person is present to ensure that the exam process is fair to the student and that the student's work demonstrates academic rigor.
To find an Outside Examiner for you, the Graduate School requires a minimum of two (2) weeks' notice, though three or more weeks is preferred. Please note that exams/defenses scheduled for the first or last two weeks of the semester OR during the summer term may not be able to be accommodated due to faculty workloads during those times.
