Are You a "Cool" Teacher?
According to the Illinois Family Institute, teachers who show support for LGBT students "develop reputations, often as the 'cool' teachers." Would the IFI consider you a cool teacher? Answer these questions to find out!
Is your classroom a "safe space?" Does it let your students know that their teacher is supportive of LGBT rights and that they can feel comfortable talking to you?
On your desk or in your classroom, do you display any of the following?
A "Safe Space" sticker
The Inverted Pink Triangle
The Rainbow Flag
The Greek Letter "Lambda" (λ)
Any other symbol associated with the LGBT community
I do not display any of these in my classroom.
Are you a mentor to or do you support any student groups or extracurricular activities that are focused on LGBT student issues, such as a gay-straight alliance?
Have you ever taught any of the following text or used them as part of a lesson?
While not all of these texts explicitly concern LGBT issues, they are all examples of what the IFI considers "highly controversial texts."
"The Chocolate War" by Robert Cormier
"Fat Kids Rule the World" by KL Going
"Angels in America" by Tony Kushner
"The Laramie Project" by Moisés Kaufman
"A People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn
I have not taught any of these texts in my classes.
