Troubleshooting: Offline changes not visible online

Print

If you're accessing the document online, and the changes you made while offline still aren't showing up, make sure you visit Google Docs with an active Internet connection from the same browser and computer you used offline. This will allow your changes to be synchronized to the server.

If, after this, you still don't have access to your changes, you may need to reset your offline access. Please note that this will discard any offline changes you made previously that were not synchronized to the server. However, it could prevent any further problems if syncing between your online and offline versions simply isn't working.

To ensure your offline changes are saved, please first zip up your Gears directory. This will ensure that your offline changes are backed up. You can find out how to locate your Gears directory by taking a look at this help article. Once you've located it, simply send it to a zip file.

After you've zipped up your Gears directory, you can then try resetting your offline access. To do so, remove docs.google.com as an approved domain in Google Gears. Here's how:

  1. From your browser's menus, go to Tools > Google Gears Settings.
  2. Click the Remove link next to docs.google.com
  3. Click the Save button to save your changes.

To add Google Docs as an approved domain, follow these steps:

  1. From the Docs list, click the Offline link.
  2. In the dialog that appears, click Enable offline access.

Then, start the activation process again.

Don't edit or open files in your Gears directory, as that can corrupt your data and break offline docs. If you encounter an issue and contact us to troubleshoot, we may ask you to archive and save the files within your Gears directory.
