Guidelines from the National Academies: White papers may not be more than 7 pages in length, single spaced, including all figures, tables, references and appendices. Papers can include web links to other documents among the references.
* A cover page may be included (beyond the 7-page limit) that should include the title of the white paper, the primary author’s name, phone number, institution, and email address, and a list of co-authors with their respective institutions.
* Use a 12-pt font with 1-inch margins on all sides of the document. One column format.
* Papers in Microsoft Word (.doc or *.docx), Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) formats will be accepted. No other formats will be accepted.
* White paper file sizes should be as small as possible. White papers larger than 50 Mb in size cannot be accepted, and files much smaller than this are encouraged. For file management purposes, please compress your figures as much as possible. You can provide hyperlinks to higher resolution versions of illustrations if you wish. *See template on https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ixI3Lluu3LQPukIicqo69tyDZwe8O8c2.
DEADLINES: Current deadline for decadal white papers is July 4 via submission through the National academy's website by each paper's primary author.<<<<<<ADVICE for white papers: Make it easy on the panel and committee readers.  They are reading this and will have to write the report in the end.  Help them!  Have tables and images they can use. 7 pages is not long and being succinct is useful.  This is NOT a research paper.  It is a sales document for your idea, mission or your suggestion. Answer the strategy question: What is the purpose of the white paper? It can be information (maybe better to publish a paper), a concept/idea for future missions for panel and ex. committee consideration, or even input into DS for technological advances that will enable new science/missions. If your white paper is a community input, it should be well-supported by a majority of the community i.e. have lots of signatures and have inputs from a large set of scientists/technologists/engineers.  If not, it is ok to have fewer signatures on a very thoughtful paper - especially if the idea is novel and well-thought out. Provide a paragraph with context for your idea/scientific point in comparison to other bodies and how it fits into “planetary science’.  The last DS had in Chapter The Motivations for Planetary Science and Recent Achievements in Planetary Science. Although it might not be identical this time, it might be useful to have your input easily assimilated into such sections.  Show how important your work is - but in the context of planetary science as a whole. Please put in this column a link to whatever current version of the document you'd like to share (doc/pdf/etc). We recommend that primary authors who place documents in the main folder make their documents read-only.
