@healthmap shared detailed anonymised data. Filter England data to match Local Authority boundaries. Pivot-table them into time-series attributes per Local Authority. Use @kennethfield coxcombs in ArcGIS. Parse the class_ field into dates. Post the newly time-enabled coxcombs to fan out and show infectuous arrivals. See also: bit.ly/pivot_fan

Effective map labelling with MAPublisher and Natural Earth dataFundamentals of Label Placement
21
https://youtu.be/oQNsNkAei1chttps://youtu.be/aFjeG-cFclg
22

I want to show a workflow that I use a lot for general reference / overview maps where I want to strike a balance between quality and speed. The combination of MAPublisher with the Natural Earth dataset gives me the right tools to do this.

Typography can make or break a map, and the careful, thoughtful placement of labels is key. I'll discuss the guidelines and philosophy that inform my everyday labeling practice, and that I teach to all my students.

Wrangling Data and Visualizing Patterns with Python and GISTextures & Patterns
35
https://youtu.be/RNwIE7zp8qEhttps://youtu.be/MqJtQDAl4aY
36

Every map relies on wrangled data, and spatial analysis often starts with a little (or a ton of) data exploration. I'd like to share a few examples using Python and Jupyter Notebooks to wrangle election participation data, as well as running a few exploratory methods in ArcGIS Pro. But really, I just want to chat with folks and reconnect.

A nice subtle texture on a map layer can go a long ways. It can add a tactical feel to your project, reinforce a theme, and better evoke what the feature is in the real world.

You need not go to shutterstock to get a nice grain! All ya need is a phone and a sidewalk. Maybe a nice 60's shag carpet. I'll show how you can convert "anything" into a pattern in Photoshop & Illustrator.

Shorelines & Color Palettes: 2 Map design tricks in IllustratorMapublisher/Creative Cloud and QGIS/Affinity workflow comparison
63
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwdWPTLF_Pchttps://youtu.be/ZJ65KLumsfg
64

Many cartographers use a graphics editor program like Illustrator to finish off their map's aesthetic. I will share a couple of shoreline design techniques to give your map some character without overwhelming the gestalt. I will also share a handy trick I like to use for choosing colors in my map design, which can be applied in any mapping or graphic design program.

The ridiculously low cost of QGIS and the Affinity Suite (Designer, Photo & Publisher) makes cartography more accessible to people. But does the combination of QGIS/Designer hold up to a combination of MAPublisher/Adobe Illustrator?

As QGIS has become more important in my workflow, I have been experimenting with Affinity tools. I printed a simple book as a test, and I used it on a bike map that is currently being printed.

My first impression of Affinity Designer was that it's a joke. It lacks most selection tools available in Illustrator. But I'm discovering new approaches to mapping, and it's so much fun!

Blender shading tips and tricksThematic mapping: This is my truth, tell me yours

85

A quick look at using Blender's material tools and modifiers to create procedural shading for relief maps.

How many maps can you make with one dataset? The answer is a lot and there's no right or wrong. I'll rifle through a whole slew of thematic map types from the common to the bizarre, and explore the data considerations, opportunities, constraints and common pitfalls. The intent is to show how the map mediates the message and choosing the right map, and making it right are vital to sharing the message you intend.

Smooth-Sharp Hillshade: An Ambient Lighting Terrain Effect (hack) for ArcGIS Pro

You’ll be whiling away ½ hour of your allotted time on this earth leaning into achieving surprisingly pleasing hillshade effects by layering up several hillshade scales and slope shades, then an outright hack to bring some sharpness back into your surprisingly realistic ephemerally-illuminated environment. Then, time-permitting, we’ll blend it into imagery for a bumpified effect. Get ready to live.
