Description of OUTREACH Events!

Absolutely no skill sets are needed to volunteer!

Children's Learning and Play Festival:

We will be sharing a booth with Tonto Creek Kids Camp. They will
6
be building LEGO cars and we will be providing solar panels for
7
them to use. We will talk about how solar cells are made, as well
8
as have them participate in the "energy conservation" activity.

STEM Saturday:

During this event you would be working with students that are in 6-8 grades.

QESST takes over 2 classrooms of students. There are approx 30 students in each class.

Normally, we have 1 grad student who leads a discussion and an activity and another grad student
14
who supports. There is also a classroom teacher for assistance. The activity can be one that is
15
premade such as our solar cars, ovens, pumps, amusment park OR it can be one you suggest.

Whatever activity you decide needs to be FUN and a Hands-on Activity.

ASU Homecoming:

ASU's annual Homecoming Blockparty showcases many different events and booths for a 4 hour
20
period. The time is not announced normally until the week before. This depends on if our football
21
game will be televised. It is typically a large event and the more volunteers we have the better
22
we can represent QESST to the public. All QESST scholars are expected to participate.

Last year's activities included: Thin Films, making solar cells, solar cells and motors with kids,
24
picture opportunities- dressing up to go in the clean room.

Night of Open Door:

This activity occurs at night at the ERC on the ASU Campus. This is one of our largest
28
outreach events. Hands on activites, Lab tours, Solar car races are some of the activites
29
we did last year. ALL QESST scholars are expected to participate!

MESA day- QESST has designed and also sponsors the Solar Car Race for MESA (Math
33
"Math Engineering and Science Achievement) We provide the necessary volunteers and
34
materials to 300 underserved middle schools and high school students. Volunteers are needed
35
to judge the race, score the engineering design notebook, give advice when car not working,
36
man the pitstop, take time.
