Concepts and Definitions

4
A household is defined as a single person, or a group of people living at the same
5
address who have the address as their only or main residence and either
6
share one main meal a day or share living accommodation (or both).
7
8
For the purposes of this bulletin, estimates only include those households with at least
9
one person aged 16 to 64.
10
11
A workless household is a household that includes at least one person aged 16 to 64
12
where no-one aged 16 or over is in employment.
13
14
Children refers to all children under 16.
15
16
Dependent children are children aged under 16 and those aged 16 to 18 who
17
have never-married and in full-time education.
18
19
The other household types columns in tables B, G and L refer to households which
20
contain two or more family units, or two or more people belonging to separate family units.
21
22
The household reference person is the householder, i.e.. the person who:
23
24
a) owns the household accommodation, or
25
b) is legally responsible for the rent of the accommodation, or
26
c) has the household accommodation as an emolument or perquisite, or
27
d) has the household accommodation by virtue of some relationship to the owner who is
28
not a member of the household.
29
If there are joint householders the household reference person will be the one with the
30
highest income. If their income is the same, then the eldest householder is taken.

Seasonality
33
34
None of the figures in this release can be seasonally adjusted because the LFS
35
household datasets are available for April-June and October-December quarters only. In
36
order to carry out seasonal adjustment data would have to be available for each quarter.
