7 | Wrap around services for at risk youth | Diplomas Now | Diplomas Now partners with the school community to reorganize the schedule so each student at risk has caring adults and those adults have the tools to improve achievement. Working with administrators and teachers, a Diplomas Now team sets goals based on students’ attendance, behavior and course performance. They develop a strategic plan, implement an early warning system to identify struggling students and regularly review the data. Teachers and the Diplomas Now team craft individual student plans that include more math and English time and teacher teams with shared planning time. For the neediest students, Diplomas Now helps form support groups and connects them with community resources, such as counseling, health care, housing, food and clothing. Full-time young adults welcome students to school, call them if they don’t show up, and offer tutoring. They intervene to help resolve problems and celebrate positive behavior. 11 | Mediation and community building | Council in Schools | CIS provide training and consultation for educators who wish to integrate the practice of Council, a community building practice of authentic expression and empathic, non-judgmental listening and receptivity, into mainstream school curricula, creative arts, instructional strategies, support services, and school communities. The Council in Schools initiative includes numerous national and international projects. In Southern California, we serve more than 12,000 students with weekly councils in more than 60 public and independent schools. These students come from highly diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Our programs also serve the adult members of the school communities (teachers, counselors, administrators, parents, and community members) with opportunities to be trained to lead student councils and/or continue the practice of Council. It doesn't matter if they have never even played the game before, we ensure they have a place that is safe and welcoming, where they can play and thrive, belong and contribute. Our goal is every kid takes this positive experience back to the classroom, back to learning, and back to their communities. As coaches, teachers, parents and grown-ups who care deeply about kids, every day we witness the powerful, unique ability of play to bring out the best in our children. From fostering imaginations and creativity, to providing opportunities to learn teamwork and conflict resolution skills, play and recess are critical parts of childhood. Playworks is the only organization in the country to send well-trained, energetic full-time program coordinators, called coaches, into low-income schools to become part of the community through play. For nearly two decades, Playworks has served schools around the country, using games, bouncy balls, hula hoops and jump ropes as tools to bring out the best in kids.
