Title: Museoception: A Historical and Relational Consideration of Community Museums and Cultural Policy
Description: There are over 2600 museums in what is now known as Canada. Most of these are community museums, experiencing overlapping and intersecting cultural policies from all levels of government. Due to these complexities, the relationships supporting and regulating community museums are not well understood.
Robin Nelson is currently working with Grant MacEwan College. The session will begin with a consideration of Robin's research on community museum policy in New Brunswick, Ontario, and Yukon. After identifying some common themes and concerns, Robin will discuss the ways government and community action have shaped the development of both individual museums and the sector broadly. The session will conclude with a reflection on the question - Is it important or simply interesting to study community museum's history in relation to government policy and community action?
