Position: Parent Organizer
Reports to: Deputy Field Director, Common Sense Kids Action
Location: Positions available across California

Organizational Background:
Kids don't have entrenched special interest groups. No lobbyists on retainer. But we know that when it comes to kids, parents are the best advocates. We are building an army of parents to be ready to call their representatives, write their local newspapers, and talk to their neighbors about what we can do today to ensure kids are California's top priority. With one out of every seven Americans residing in our state, we have an opportunity to help millions of people. Together, we can demand a California where all kids have the opportunity to thrive.

Common Sense Kids Action builds on the existing work and platforms of Common Sense, a leading national nonprofit organization with more than a decade of experience helping kids and families navigate the rapidly changing world of media and technology. With Kids Action, Common Sense is expanding its state and national efforts to ensure that all kids have a powerful voice.

The Position:
Parent Organizers recieve intensive training in grassroots organizing tactics and political engagement. We provide our Parent Organizers ongoing training in public speaking, leadership, management, and other professional deveopment skills. Our trainings are facilitated by leading experts in public policy, organizing, and leadership development to help our Parent Organizers gain skills that will last a lifetime.

The Parent Organizer is responsible for growing teams of parents and concerned adults and training them in how to advocate on behalf of children and families. The Parent Organizer will receive training to recruit other parents, conduct outreach to neighborhood groups, hold neighborhood events, and train others in how to work with elected officials.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
        • Meeting one-on-one with parents and stakeholders in the community
        • Giving presentations about Common Sense Kids Action and pending legislation
        • Holding earned media events to garner press coverage about important issues
        • Hosting neighborhood meetings to discuss important legislative topics
        • Organizing community service projects in your neighborhood
        • Using data to track contacts and interactions
        • Nurturing relationships with the parenting teams
        • Join a weekly video conference with Common Sense leadership and fellow Parent Organizers

Qualifications:
        • Available 20–25 hours per week (scheduling is flexible)
        • A deep commitment to Common Sense's mission of putting children first
        • Written and verbal communication skills
        • Membership in or affiliations with neighborhood organizations and groups
        • A car and valid insurance
        • Self-starter and able to effectively hold oneself accountable for results
        • Political organizing or nonprofit experience preferred
        • Reliable access to internet and a computer

Pay:
$1,000/month
