Commercialising research and transitioning into industry: spinning out, challenges and opportunities outside academia
Speaker: Dr Aswin Doekhie (Lecturer at the Department of Biology & Biochemistry - University of Bath)
One of the best ways to demonstrate the potential impact of your scientific research is the ability to put commercial value on it. Forming a spin-out company enables commercialisation of intellectual property and is possible whether the application targets a specific niche or is a platform technology that’s widely applicable. Deciding to embark on this exciting journey is not one for the faint of heart, however, it does provide some unique insights on the translational pathway from academia to industry. Intellectual property is the stronghold on which the business will be built but to create a successful business it’s essential to work with experienced business developers to create a business plan and attract investors. Finding a demand for your technology or creating the demand, by demonstrating the unique selling points of your tech, can open doors into a different world where real change can be made.
Together with a founding team, I’ve been going through the journey of spinning out of the University of Bath with our company, EnsiliTech. The lengthy setup process is almost complete with the company expected to be up and running by September. Come along and I’ll share what I’ve been doing on this journey so far and what to expect onwards!
