Registration for Freedom Ride Jozi: Sunday 20 July 2014
"The purpose of freedom is to create it for others."
(Nelson Mandela, Robben Island, 1979)
The Freedom Ride is a cycle ride to celebrate the spirit and legacy of Nelson Mandela. Designed to link the communities of Johannesburg and Soweto, it will start and end at the Nelson Mandela Bridge in Braamfontein and pass sites of historical significance, including Newclare Cemetery, where Walter and Albertina Sisulu are buried, and the Mandela home on Vilakazi Street in Orlando West. Backed by the City of Johannesburg, the Joburg Urban Cyclists Association, Linkd Environmental Services, Cycology, the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport and the Bicycling Empowerment Network (BEN), the ride aims to bring people back into the city and raise awareness about bicycles as a form of transport and recreation.
Total distance: 34.6 km (no route changes this time).
Approximate cycling time: three hours (for a shorter route participants can also catch a train from Orlando Station back to Braamfontein). Rea Vaya buses are also available.
On submitting this form, please consider a donation to setting up a bicycle empowerment centre in Soweto. There is a link to the Bicycling Empowerment Network site.
