Class 3

Cozy Web & Threadapalooza

⚠️ Today’s class is a choose-your-own adventure. If you missed a previous class or didn’t finish the previous class assignments, you are welcome to scroll down and start there. Or you can just start here, up to you! ⚠️

  1. Update the class list.

  • Add your account if you haven’t already
  • Add your do 100 things to column F
  • Add your blogpost/screenshots thread to column G

  1. Check in with your classmates!

If you haven’t pinned the class Twitter list, go to
https://x.com/  [YOUR USERNAME]/lists[d][e][f]. Then click the pin icon.

Scroll through the list and:

  • Reply to 3 of your classmates’ tweets

  • Quote tweet one of your classmates tweets

  1. Ask 3 classmates their favorite follow or for a follow they recommend to you in particular. You can do this IRL or on Twitter

Then add recommended accounts to the class spreadsheet!!!!!

  1. If you’re newer to Twitter, skim the following how-to links and read anything that interests you. Reply to one tweet - it’s okay (good, even) to reply to tweets even if they’re several years old!

Threads:

  1. write a 2024 goals tweet. And post to column H

EXAMPLE: https://x.com/gptbrooke/status/1742236202856784367

  1. Threadapalooza Challenge

Background

Threadpalooza takes place every December. Participants choose a topic and write 100 tweets about that topic. Today we’re gonna do one even though it’s not December 🙂

First, read any of the following threadapaloozas that interest you, so you can get a sense of what it is:

  1. Working in complex gov’t systems
  2. Gumptionology
  3. Cleaning
  4. Visualization and Cognition
  5. Stray thoughts and feelings

Choosing a Topic

  • Brainstorm 10 topics you have a lot to say about
  • Some prompts to help you think of a topic:
  • What are your hobbies?
  • What do you do for work?
  • What annoys you?
  • What have you been on about lately?
  • What are you often asked about?
  • Choose a topic
  • If you’re not sure which to choose, talk to someone else in the class about it!
  • OPTIONAL: You can do this in pairs if you’d like. One person tags the other person and then you both write threads

Write 100 Tweets

  • Award given to the most tweets written by the end of class
  • Award given to anyone who writes all 100 by next class

Class 2

Effortpoast a thread

  1. Find a blog post you like
  2. Google “highlighter Chrome extension” and download one. Priya uses “Roam Highlighter”
  3. Read the post and highlight your favorite bits
  4. Screenshot the highlighted parts. OPTIONAL: You can command + option + J to open Chrome dev tools and pretend your laptop is a phone if you want
  5. Summarize the parts you find interesting about the post IN A DOCUMENT. (not straight to Twitter because Twitter might glitch)
  6. Tweet with relevant screenshots

Class 1

  1. Add your Twitter to the class list.

In-app list to follow and track everyone: https://x.com/i/lists/1820949032061301208

You will be posting a lot in the next four weeks. If you’re uncomfortable doing that on your main, please make an alt and use that instead. If you are uncomfortable having a public account, a locked account is okay as long as you allow me & your classmates to follow you. (Note: A locked account can be good practice! Our friend taco belle was locked for a few months and within a few hours of unlocking she had her first super-banger. Nowadays she regularly goes viral. She says something about the freedom of being locked helped her stop self-censoring).

  1. If you’re new to Twitter, add a profile picture and bio.

If you need ideas for a bio, look at 5 of your favorite tweeter’s bios. But don’t spend too much time here because you can always change it later.

  1. If you are new to Twitter and do not like the posts on your timeline, edit your timeline.

  • If you have any IRL friends who you know use Twitter and want to follow, follow them.
  • Follow the following 10 people. They are schelling points and will naturally lead you to other people you might enjoy: visakanv, …
  • Go to your settings and mute a few words that correlate with content you don’t like. I especially recommend muting political and culture war-related words.

Assignments

  1. Replyguy to 5 people

Scroll your timeline until you find something to reply to.

Rules:

  1. Only reply to tweets you enjoyed or found interesting (even if you disagreed). Don’t respond to “bad tweets” ever.
  2. Don’t procrastinate. If you keep skimming tweets and not choosing any to reply to, reply to the next 5 tweets you see.

2. Tweet 5 times in a row, anything you want

“Help Priya, I don’t know what to tweet”

To find stuff to tweet, I advise looking in your notes app (if you have one), or looking at recent text conversation history with friends. Have you sent someone an interesting link recently, or a dumb meme, or a shower thought? Have you had a good conversation?

3. Write a thread on a blog post you like

Rules:

  1. Choose a post you’ve already read and know you like. Ideally one of your favorite posts of all time, or something you read recently that made you think.
  2. Must be at least 3 tweets long
  3. Here’s an example.

4. Make a moodboard

Examples from Visa

Example from Keesh

Example from Parth

5. Ask a question of your followers. Link it in column 3.

Example.

6. Make your first poll.

Example.

7. Choose a “do 100 things” quest, add it to your bio.

If you’re unfamiliar with “do 100 things,” it’s a meme started by Visa that caught on in TPOT. The idea is to something you’d like to learn or get good at, and then do it 100 times.

Keesh example.

[Can someone link Billy example? I can’t find it]

8. Reply to 3 questions asked by your classmates. You can find them all here.

9. Follow this list of your classmates. Then go to “More”...”Lists” and click the pin sign

This will pin the list to the top of your home page so it’s easy to read tweets from your classmates

Recommended

I recommend that you also follow your classmates for the duration of the class, and interact with them regularly.
