Follow-up email to administration, sent on September 4th:

Dear All,

Nearly 400 people (current students, former students, alum, faculty, and community members) have signed our Call to Action, in the 9 days since we sent it to you. Yet the University has not issued a public statement to address or even acknowledge our demands. Instead, faculty and staff on diversity committees have scanned the list of signatories and singled out individual students, asking them to meet one-on-one. The silence on the part of the administration and the individual emails sent by faculty and staff reflect one of the key points raised in the statement: that the University of Chicago fails to recognize how racism is endemic to the institution, as it relegates issues of race to small subcommittees and individual staff members. We are calling upon the administration to publicly respond to our Call to Action with details about how the University of Chicago plans to act on our demands.

Short of a public response, we can only assume that the University of Chicago does not value Black graduate students.

A Call to Action from University of Chicago Black Graduate Students

In response to the most recent (re)commitments by the University to racial justice, the faculty affiliates of the Center for the Study of Race, Politics and Culture issued a Call To Action highlighting several concrete ways the University has failed to confront its own racist and hierarchical practices. The faculty letter lays bare how the University has left the CSRPC to languish without proper support, most notably in the failure to secure a Director, while simultaneously touting the Center (and the work of the faculty, staff and students who comprise its body) as a site of progressive and cutting-edge research on race. Without properly examining how the University itself has maintained systems of racial disparity—both within its walls and in the surrounding South Side Chicago community—its consistently vague language of diversity and inclusion will continue to ring hollow.

As Black Graduate students at UChicago, we stand in solidarity with the faculty’s action, while also taking this moment to express concerns and needs unique to our position. But even our identification indicates a problem: absent the creation of a proper Critical Race Studies departments or formal space for Black Graduate students, the CSRPC has unfairly become the de facto centripetal force bringing us together. Among other obstacles, the University’s decentralized structure has inhibited the tasks of streamlining social support and mutual aid among its Black graduate students. As students associated with the Center, we are primarily located in the Humanities and Social Sciences, and cannot claim in full to represent the unique hurdles faced by Black students in the Biological Science Division, Physical Science Division, professional schools, or master’s programs.

If the University is to legitimately confront its own perpetuation of racial hierarchies, it must account for the difficulties faced by Black graduate students across its campus. Its rhetoric of diversity and inclusion is inadequate to redress the lived experiences of the 78 percent of Black UChicago community members who have been discriminated against and, per the 2016 Climate Survey, have “considered not recommending the University to a prospective member of our community.” The shortcomings of this inquiry aside, these numbers are higher than those for any other racial/ethnic group, and our call is for the University to address the detrimentally anti-Black campus climate not only for our own sake but also for Black people who may be affiliated with UChicago in the future.

We must also emphasize that Black people who have a relationship with this campus are not limited to students, faculty and staff of the University, but are also our neighbors in the Hyde Park and Woodlawn communities. With UChicago’s numerous building projects and aggressive physical expansion, many more people become ensnared by this campus unwillingly and as a result of University of Chicago Police Department’s enforcement of its encroaching borders. We call on the University to take the opinions, thoughts, and needs of this part of the campus community into account. If the University is truly committed to enacting sustainable changes that adequately reckon with its perpetuation of racial disparity, then it must attend to the concerns of the people who have been most brutally impacted by UChicago’s continuous projects of gentrification and policing.

Due to the lack of a coordinated team devoted to the issues of Black graduate students—and those of graduate students of color more broadly— we have had to improvise our own social and scholarly support systems. But without institutional support, these initiatives  (e.g. the Transcending Boundaries Symposium, and various “peer mentoring” programs) lack the capacity to serve graduate students of color across campus. It is embarrassing that students at such a wealthy and prestigious university should have to hound departments for funds to recognize the research, work, achievements, and basic humanity of graduate students of color. The lack of robust staffing and dedicated funding, supplemented with vague language around diversity and inclusion, signals that the university does not value the work of the Black scholars on which it has become so heavily dependent. Even so, many of us have dedicated our time and energy to efforts we hope will improve the campus climate for Black students (graduate, undergraduate, and professional), both with and without the promise of pay or recognition. We have recruited students and mentored them because no one else would.

Too often, Black graduate students have had our labor appropriated into causes meant to better our own conditions. We serve on search committees and diversity boards, mentor other graduate students of color, recruit prospective students, and even support faculty when they, too, become tired from doing many of these same forms of labor. In short, both with respect to CSRPC and beyond, Black graduate students have been asked to sustain the very systems, programs and people that were originally meant to sustain us.

Additionally, we condemn the termination of the Special Trustee’s Program, which provided central funding for under-represented minority doctoral students. This directly contradicts the University’s supposed commitment to diversity, and it jeopardizes not only the recruitment of graduate students of color, but also their retention. Many of us know at least one Black graduate student who did not complete their program primarily due to the stress and exhaustion of navigating this university. With the withdrawal of this pool of funding, the university has rescinded one of its few material measures of sustaining the work of its Black doctoral students.

We agree with and support the demands issued by CSRPC faculty affiliates; we recognize that the University also conscripts graduate students into forms of labor that conceal the gap between its stated ideals and practices. Standing in solidarity with the faculty, we further demand that the University:

  • Dedicate additional lines of funding for graduate scholarship dedicated to exploring the complexity of race beyond the CSRPC’s dissertation and travel fellowships
  • Reinstate funding for underrepresented minorities across divisions, with the recognition that

standard admissions processes are often compromised by anti-Black bias, and that studying race and experiencing anti-Black racism are fundamentally different problems that require different commitments

  • Provide additional funding available for Black graduate students throughout the duration of graduate study to develop networks and scholarship within and beyond UChicago
  • Invest in repaying the debts outlined by Reparations at UChicago Working Group and listen to and collaborate with individuals and communities on the South Side to do this
  • Acknowledge the University of Chicago’s foundations in enslaved labor and stolen indigenous land; recognizing that these debts are too large and profound to ever fully be repaid
  • Defund the University’s private police force and redistribute those funds into the communities most brutalized by the University’s presence as outlined by #CareNotCops
  • Establish a formal grievance and reconciliation process to address pernicious and overt instances  of racial aggression and abuses of power
  • Ensure graduate student representation and decision-making power in all areas of university governance

We would withhold our labor from all diversity initiatives and pedagogical activities (e.g. teach Critical Race Studies or Black Studies courses, lead workshops, invite outside scholars for talks, serve on hiring committees, etc.) in pursuit of these demands, were it not for our material needs and precarious positions as Black graduate students. But, we have to navigate hierarchical power relations to faculty, on which our funding and matriculation is often dependent; we instruct and support undergraduates, whose time here is both crucial and especially short; we still need to build skills, experiences, and relationships in order to sustain our intellectual work. Our investments are complex, and the difficulty we experience in outlining action items underscores our precarity.

What we will do

This University has come to rely heavily on our unrecognized labor, and we will withhold the following if these demands are not met.

  • We will no longer sit on diversity committees
  • We will no longer recruit Black prospective students on behalf of the University
  • We will not lead departmental diversity programs
  • We will not allow our accomplishments (e.g. external grants, fellowships, or awards)

to be touted through UChicago channels

We are asking for more than the removal of a brick. We are seeking a shift in the foundation.
