QuickStart Guide to Posterous

www.posterous.com

What is it?

Posterous is a FREE web service that converts email messages, with attachments, into blog posts. It’s the easiest way to share text as well as rich media files online. If you can send email, you can blog with Posterous.

Why would I use it?

Information can be shared in more accessible, flexible ways with a blog than with email. Use posterous to:

  1. Share text-based messages with others (for teachers these can be announcements, assignments, ideas, and examples of student work)
  2. Ask for feedback on an idea or topic (visitors can leave comments)
  3. Share pictures
  4. Share links to other websites (links to YouTube videos are automatically converted with “embed code” like magic - you don’t have to copy and paste code!)
  5. Share audio recordings (Posterous makes embedded flash players automatically to let visitors play your mp3 or other files)
  6. Share videos (Posterous will convert video files to flash and embed them for you)
  7. Cross-post to other websites and social networks (Posterous can share to Facebook, Twitter, and other blogs you may have already setup or may setup in the future)

How do I use it?

  1. Log into an email account you own and can access in your current location. If you don’t have a web-based email account, consider setting up a free Gmail account. http://mail.google.com
  2. Compose a new email message, which will become a blog post.
  1. Address the message to post@posterous.com
  2. Type an email subject line you want to use as the title of your blog post.
  3. Type the textual content you want to share in the email.
  4. Include full hyperlinks (with the http:// first) that you want to share
  5. Add any media attachments you want (photos, audio files, video files, etc.)
  1. That’s it! Your message and any attached media will be posted to your own Posterous website.
  1. Log into www.posterous.com using your email address to access your site.
  2. Choose to MANAGE your site and customize it if desired.
  1. Share the link to your Posterous site with others so they can access your content.
  1. Sample link: http://wfryer.posterous.com
  2. People can “subscribe” to your updates via email to stay informed when you share new content.

HAVE FUN SHARING WITH YOUR EMAIL ACCOUNT AND POSTEROUS!
