Subject: Northeast (NOE) Newsletter

Hello everyone. Just wanted to send out a brief newsletter to update everyone on upcoming events and crime information.

How to sign up for the Northeast (NOE) Newsletter

I always get email requests from people who get sent a copy of the NOE newsletter - and then ask me to add them to the e-mail list. Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult for me to add you on our end (it's complicated - epolicing is a Citywide program and the networks are downtown). However, it is very easy to sign up - just go our website - lapdonline.org Then click on the "epolicing" icon and add your address/zip code and you will start to receive all e-mail blasts and the newsletters. Thanks for your understanding.

Upcoming Events

Note: We will be opening the sub-station at the LAPD Museum on Mondays and Fridays (two days a week) between 11:00 AM to 3 PM. A police officer will be available to answer questions and take crime reports if needed.

We just had a C-PAB meeting last Monday night and it was very informative. Deputy Chief Jose Perez, Commanding Officer of Operations-Central Bureau, attended and talked about his views on community-based policing and the state of the City's budget. We also had a detective from our Commercial Crimes Division talk about identity theft and how to protect yourself from becoming a victim. It was a fascinating talk about credit card skimming methods and probably scared everyone in attendance from using an ATM machine or credit card at a gas pump ever again.

Want to thank the C-PAB for quickly adding and funding a Burglary Prevention - Neighborhood Watch - door handle flyer as an initiative this year. Burglaries (residential and commercial) are a big problem for us and we need to get our residents not leave their garage doors and second story windows wide open (especially during the summer months when the weather gets hot). Senior lead officers and neighborhood watch members will distribute the door handle flyers. Hopefully, it will be a successful crime prevention program.

Note: We have been giving out sanitation trash bin stickers (provides scavenging warning) to the public. If your trash bin does not have one, please contact the Northeast Community Relations Office at (213) 485-2548. There are some available in the front lobby.

We are also selling the "CLUB" steering wheel locking device for $11 at Northeast Station, 3353 San Fernando Road, Monday through Friday between 8 AM to 4 PM.

We ask that you have either the $11 in cash or make a check out to "BLEND." Thanks

On Tuesday August 3, 2010, come on out and spend the evening with your neighborhoods at this annual event. Right now there are two scheduled events to be held in Echo Park at the Walgreen's Store on Sunset and Echo Park, and a second at the Target Store in Eagle Rock, at the Eagle Rock Plaza. National Night Out is a fun and informative event with entertainment provided at each site. - On Wednesday July 28, 2010, from 6-9 PM, at the Dodger Stadium "Stadium Club" overlooking the right field and first base lines. The Dodgers recently renovation the Stadium Club and it now has an overhang deck with a spectacular view of the ballpark. Everyone is invited to this event and free parking will be provided in lot "L." Come hear from your Captains, SLOs, and elected officials regarding the "State of Northeast Area." Make sure you get there early as last year several hundred people attended this event. (BLEND) Annual Installation Luncheon will be on Wednesday July 28, 2010 @ 11:30 at the Police Academy, 1880 Academy Drive. Please contact Northeast Community Relations for tickets and information. Begins on July 7, 2010 and will run through the Labor Day weekend. This year Northeast Area will have three parks participating: Cypress Park, Glassell Park, and Piedmont Park (Highland Park). Many people - especially Councilmember Ed Reyes - have strongly advocated adding Piedmont Park to the SNL locations - thanks for your support. This is a great program that has certainly help reduce crime in our neighborhoods. Please take advantage of the programs offered at these parks - free food will be available courtesy of the "Hungry Hog" restaurant. (C-PAB) monthly meeting - On Monday July 26, 2010, at 6 PM, at LAPD Police Museum, 6045 York Boulevard, Highland Park. Come participate in discussing community issues and developing solutions to our problems.

Neighborhood Crime Update

Echo Park

Over the last week the crime looks good. Over the past 28-Days there are some property crimes occuring along the Sunset corridor mostly from late PM hours through daybreak (a few car break-in and GTAs). We had a bad burglary problem that I spoke about in the last newsletter. This has been cleaned up tremendously with several arrests of burglars over the past four weeks.

Elysian Valley

Very clear over the past week - only a few property crimes over the past 28-Days.

Silver Lake

The last week looks good with a couple of burglaries and car break-ins. However, over the 28-Day period there was a significant car break-in problem occurring from late PM hours through dawn. During the past 3-4 weeks Northeast Area has lost a lot of deployment to Lakers playoff games, the Lakers Championship Parade, and various Dodger Stadium events - the Arizona Diamondbacks Protest (over the Arizona Immigration law) and the Dodger-Yankee baseball series. These events are all completed and our deployment should be more consistent throughout the rest of the summer.

There was a street robbery that occurred June 22, 2010 on Griffith Park near Hyperion. A female victim was entering her car when a suspect approached from behind and grabbed the victim's purse. The suspect punched the victim several times in the face as he struggled to gain control of the purse. The victim screamed and several neighbors came to her aid. The suspect fled in a 2006-2008 Jeep Cherokee - Blue Color. Suspects are described as a male Hispanic and a female Hispanic, 20-25 years old. There was concern that this is part of a series of robberies in the Silverlake area - no it isn't. There were several robberies along the Sunset corridor (mostly in the East Hollywood area) and our detectives are investigating if there are any connections to the Silverlake robbery (probably not - as of now). We have sent out e-mail blasts to different organizations (FHRA, etc.) informing them of this incident.

Franklin Hills

Over the past week there has been several car break-ins and larcenies during daytime hours. This is unusual as this area generally experiences these types of crimes during the midnight to dawn time period. We have placed a footbeat unit in the area and extra officers. Over the past 28-Day period the crime looks pretty good.

Los Feliz

Car break-ins are occurring mostly during the middle of the night. You may have seen on the news that a member of the rock band "The Black Eye Peas" (a local resident) had his car broken into and his IPAD stolen. We followed up on some leads provided by the victim that resulted in the identification of a suspect responsible for at least 5 car break-ins (should have him in custody soon). We used the media coverage to talk about not leaving valuable items in plain view in your vehicle.

During the summer many people go to the LA Zoo or take advantage of beautiful Griffith Park. Criminals understand this all too well - so protect yourself and do not leave valuable items in your cars. We will have extra patrols at these locations and work closely with General Services PD and the Park Rangers to decrease criminal activity in these areas.

East Hollywood

As previously discussed, had several robberies in the area mostly occurring in the late PM and early morning hours. Also experience an increase in larcenies (petty thefts at stores and a couple of residents) during the PM hours.

Eagle Rock

Very clear over the past week. Had a problem with burglaries (mostly commercial) and car break-ins.

We just arrested a major burglary team that is responsible for multiple burglaries in the Eagle Rock and Echo Park areas (including the commercials mentioned above). This should have a strong impact on burglaries in these neighborhoods.

Several robbery suspects took down the Trader Joe's Store on Colorado Boulevard in an incident that garnered major media attention. One of the store clerks attempted to stop the robbery by smacking one of the suspects in the head with a wine bottle. The suspect then shot him for doing this (victim now is OK). This crime shocked the community and we began to aggressively work this case. We received assistance from neighboring law enforcement agencies and were able to identify and then subsequently arrest two of the three suspects involved in this case - including the shooter (we are looking for the third suspect). We presented the case to the DA's office and obtained nine counts of robbery with gun enhancements and a third strike charge on the shooter. If convicted, he will spend the rest of his life in prison. The other suspect will go to prison for a very long time. I will keep you updated on this crime.

Cypress Park

Very clear over the last week. A few property crimes along the Figueroa Corridor.

Glassell Park

Very clear over the last week. Had a few burglaries over the 28-Day period.

Atwater Village

Very good over last week. Had a few property crimes in and around Los Feliz (shopping plaza).

Mount Washington

Last week was pretty good. Car break-ins close to the Figueroa Corridor during daytime hours during the first two weeks of the 28-Day period. This disappeared after we put a lot of police officers in the area.

Highland Park

Last week had a few property crimes close to Figueroa in the 50s. Sporadic crime throughout the area during the 28-Day period. You may have heard that Councilmember Ed Reyes son was a witness to a robbery (his two friends were robbed as they rode their bicycles on Monte Vista at Ave 56). Our Gang Unit jumped on this quickly and within two days arrested 2 of the three suspects involved (still working on the other). We received DA filings for robbery on the suspects.

Anyway, that's it for now. Please be safe and do not leave valuable items in your cars! Take care Bill 26152@lapd.lacity.org
