Characterization  To Kill A Mockingbird

Character: Scout Finch

On the top line of each section of the organiser, list an essential attribute(eg. determined, willing to take risks, courageous etc)your character possesses. On the lines below each attribute, provide pieces of evidence from the novel that exhibit the attributes you have chosen and the technique Harper Lee has used to build characterization. Make sure you cover more than 2 techniques.

Attribute: Naive

Attribute: (Violently) mischievous

Evidence from the novel & technique used:

In chapter 23,  Scout tried to make her father carry a gun and thought that would solve the problem, to protect them from Bob Ewell. She also tried crying and throwing a fit to get him to act in her favour.

Describing the thoughts of Scout. She thought that being the deadest shot in the country means that Atticus could protect them from harm. She also thought that Atticus would give in to her when she threw a fit.

Evidence from the novel & technique used:

In Chapter 25, Scout insists on smashing a roly-poly, despite Jem’s arguments that it did no harm to her.
She also said she cannot “sit around and not scratch a redbug”.

Describing the behaviour of Scout. She wanted to smash up all the bugs she could find and cannot seem to get by one day without killing an insect.

Attribute: Childish

Attribute: Very filial

Evidence from the novel & technique used:

Made a firm resolution to beat up Walter Cunningham whenever she saw him.

She thought that she could marry Jem and Dill can marry his sister so they can become double first cousins.

(Chapter 23)

Describing the thoughts of Scout. She is quite petty when dealing with Walter and kept wanting to beat him up. She also viewed marriage as a small matter, like a very young child.

Evidence from the novel & technique used:

She is always worried for her father and often inquire about what he is doing and try to help out.
Like in Chapter 25 when she could not sleep because she was worried for her father and kept thinking about what he was doing.

Describing the thoughts of Scout. She kept thinking about the activities of Atticus even when she is sleeping and this shows she cares for her father very much.

Attribute: Slightly boastful

Attribute: Rude

Evidence from the novel & technique used:

She kept repeating the fact that Atticus was the deadest shot in the country. (Beginning of Chapter 23)

Describing the actions of Scout. Scout repeated once more that Atticus was the deadest shot in the country and this repetition gives a sense that she was proud of her father’s achievements.

Evidence from the novel & technique used:

In Chapter 24 when the ladies had a meeting in her house, she kept on interrupting their talks.

Describing the actions of Scout. Scout kept asking questions when Mrs Merriweather was not finish talking. This shows she is quite rude and does not respect others’ rights to talk.

Character: Jem

Attribute: Justified

Attribute: Mature

Evidence from the novel & technique used:

In Chapter 23, he knew that Tom Robinson’s trial was unfair and said the jury should be just and impartial. He also did not take in the fact that Tom was a Negro and emphasized that he should also be treated fairly regardless of skin colour.

This describes the actions/ thinking of Jem and shows that he is impartial and feels that all man should be tried equally.

Evidence from the novel & technique used:

Unlike Scout, he used reason in his thinking and did not make any childish talk. Like in Chapter 23, when he reasoned that Atticus would not use a gun to protect them from Bob Ewell, although he was the deadest shot in the country. He also used this type of thinking when describing Tom Robinson’s case.

This describes the thoughts of Jem and shows that he is very careful in his thinking. He also took into consideration other’s point of view.

Attribute: Merciful to animals

Attribute: Filial

Evidence from the novel & technique used:

In Chapter 25, Jem insisted that Scout avoid killing a roly-poly and put it back on the back steps. He also told Scout to stop killing insects if they do not bother her.
Scout also said that her brother was never cruel to animals.

This describes the behaviour/ actions of Jem to show that he was not cruel to animals and was somewhat nice to them.

Evidence from the novel & technique used:

In Chapter 25, Jem and Dill met Atticus on the highway. Despite his father’s attempts to tell him to go home, Jem wanted to help his father and follow him.

This describes the action of Jem. His gesture of wanting to follow his father shows that he really cares for his father and he wants to find out the activities of his father.

Character: Atticus

Attribute: Very patient/ Good tempered

Attribute: Very Humble

Evidence from the novel & technique used:

In the beginning of Chapter 23, when Bob Ewell cursed and spat on Atticus, he did not lose his temper and get into a fight. Instead he kept his cool and did his best to avoid any violence. When Mr Ewell challenged him to a fight, Atticus just gave a lame excuse and left.

This describes the action of Atticus. This incident shows that he is a real gentleman and did not lose his temper over such a matter. He just let Mr Ewell be and did not pursue this matter further. This shows that he is a very well natured fellow.

Evidence from the novel & technique used:

Although he is the deadest shot in the country, Atticus was not proud of it, as Jem pointed out in the beginning of Chapter 23. He did not wield a gun often and said that having a gun is an invitation for someone to shoot you.

This describes the thought of Atticus. This shows that Atticus thinks it is not good at all to be a marksman and he avoided any use of the gun at all. He also rarely mentioned it.

Attribute: Down-to-Earth

Evidence from the novel & technique used:

When he discussed about Tom Robinson’s trial, he knew that the jury was wrong when they trialed Tom unfairly. However, he said that it is not easy to change the fact that the Negros were discriminated, and it was nearly impossible to have complete justice in the law.

This shows his way of thinking. He always thinks of feasible things and seems to accept certain facts, although they are not good. Like they cannot do away with juries although sometimes there might be some flaws and the jury might be partial/ unfair.
