Jeanine Bilik’s research on Blended Learning:

#1 “Blended Learning in K-12/Blended Learning In Grades 7-8”

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blended_Learning_in_K-12/Blended_Learning_In_Grades_7-8

Benefits of Blended Learning

Disadvantages of Blended Learning

#2 Website : “Blended  Schools .net” http://www.blendedschools.net/aboutus.php

This website presents information about several schools in Pennsylvania  that are using blended learning.  There are seven school districts in this area that are developing online courses through Blackboard. Blackboard can be modified to address the special needs and individual learning styles of each child.

Dr. Frank Garritano of the Armtrong School District talks about a high school student who is attending high school for music and art only; the remaining of the courses are taken online.  Mr. Garritano discussed the possibility of needing less buildings in the future.

Jeanine’s Research on Community of Inquiry:

I looked for school districts that use the community of inquiry model. As I searched, I found the Delano School District in Minnesota: http://www.delanoheraldjournal.com/guide/school.html

The high school curriculum called, “Project Lead the Way” focuses on developing stronger science, math, and technology skills by showing students how to utilize technology to solve everyday problems. The emphasis is to show students, not to tell them. Project Lead the Way is a nonprofit organization that partners with public schools.

The high school teachers use tablet PC to integrate technology into the classroom and enhance instruction.

Patterns for Online Community of Inquiry

Nick:

This pdf is a great source about blended learning:

http://www.inacol.org/research/promisingpractices/NACOL_PP-BlendedLearning-lr.pdf

Denotation:

Blended learning combines online delivery of educational content with the best features of classroom interaction and live instruction to personalize learning, allow thoughtful reflection, and differentiate instruction from student to student across a diverse group of learners. (Watson, 2010)

The community high school of Ann Arbor, Michigan is a blended learning environment.

        - Students meet in a classroom

        - Uses a combination of text and online curriculum

        - Weekly visits from staff who teach the content

        - Students complete a real-world project with a local nonprofit organization

Blended Learning in practice (Curriculum):

A continuum of services from classroom instruction integrating online resources to fully online with no learning done face-to-face.

Some questions to think about:

-How does blended learning fit into current conceptions of online learning?

„„-How does blended learning help engage students and support their academic

success?

„„-How are online learning and face-to-face instruction being combined effectively?

„„-Is blended learning meeting unique student needs that neither fully online nor

face-to-face models can achieve?

„„-What digital content and curricula are being used in blended learning?

This is a drawing of an ideal kindergarten classroom. Surprisingly, it incorporates key ideas from blended learning classrooms (technology, independent, etc).

One superintendent’s response to Blended Learning:

Voices from a teacher survey related to Blended Learning:

Online courses have been very beneficial because we are very small and students

need credit recovery or they need to take/retake a course we are not offering that

semester.

It has great potential for our district since we are located in a small rural isolated

area of Michigan.

Online courses provide needed options for our students in a high poverty area with

limited resources. These services expand learning opportunities for our students and

enable them [to enroll in] courses they may not be able to take in our school and to

accelerate/enhance learning through AP courses.

I can't speak for urban communities - online courses in rural areas are important.

Our teachers have multiple preps, offering electives with only a handful of students is

not feasible. As well, some instructors in areas such as foreign language are hard to

come by. Another great attribute of distance ed/ online courses is availability of dual

credit or college credit. Students can graduate high school with a semester of

college courses completed.

I believe that with the decreasing number of certified teachers available and the

economically disadvantaged rural area that I live in; this type of teaching and

learning will definitely bridge the gap. My district is in dire need of certified

teachers. ..It will also allow our students the opportunity to be more competitive in

education because they will be able to have more Honor, AP and College Preparatory

courses.

Emily’s Research

Wiki Definition: Blended Learning refers to a mixing of different learning environments. The phrase has many specific meanings based upon the context in which it is used. Blended learning gives learners and teachers a potential environment to learn and teach more effectively.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blended_learning

Blended Learning Models by Purnima Valiathan

http://www.astd.org/LC/2002/0802_valiathan.htm

This article reviewed a couple different styles of blending learning. The following chart was a part of the article.

Why

How

Skill-Driven Model:

Learning specific knowledge and skills requires regular feedback and support from the trainer, facilitator, or peer.

  • create a group-learning plan that's self-paced but bound to a strict schedule
  • pad self-paced learning material with instructor-led overview and closing sessions
  • demonstrate procedures and processes through synchronous online learning labs or a traditional classroom setting
  • provide email support
  • design long-term projects

Attitude-Driven Model

Content that deals with developing new attitudes and behaviors requires peer-to-peer interaction and a risk-free environment.

  • hold synchronous Web-based meetings (Webinars)
  • assign group projects (to be completed offline)
  • conduct role-playing simulations

Competency-Driven Model

To capture and transfer tacit knowledge, learners must interact with and observe experts on the job.

  • assign mentors
  • develop a knowledge repository (LCMS/LMS)

What we can take from this article is ideas on blended learning can take different forms so that it can suit different teaching styles. The author also included graphs of the what lessons plans would look like for these different models. In these lesson plans the author included how these models would work with and without technology. This might be interesting since, we can suggest that the idea of blended learning transcends technological boundaries.

The different scenario's might be helpful in introducing the idea of classrooms before and after the implementation of technology.

Blended Learning and Sense of Community: A comparative analysis with traditional and fully online graduate courses

Alfred P. Rovai and Hope M. Jordan

http://www.irrodl.org/index.php/irrodl/article/viewArticle/192/274.%20Accessed%2019th%20March%202006

This article describes a study where a blended learning experience was compared with a traditional classroom and a fully online class. It was found that blended learning was well liked by all students involved as it was less restricting and offered different outlets for people to demonstrate their academic strengths.

Community of Inquiry

Wiki Definition: A community of inquiry is the social and educational context that leads to “questioning, reasoning, connecting, deliberating, challenging, and developing problem-solving techniques” as described by Matthew Lipman (2003).

Online Community of Inquiry Review: Social, Cognitive, and Teaching Presene Issues

D.R. Garrison

This article was an academic discussion of how a community of inquiry worked. The author discussed how this has the ability to bring a greater connection between students within the learning environment. However this impart depends on the efforts of the students as well as the online presence of the teacher. I think we can relate this to our presentation by using this to emphasize that blending learning can and a community of inquiry is only possible if the teacher is willing to put the extra work in to make it happen.
