Friar Lawrence’s tattoo

Friar Lawrence in the Shakespearean play Romeo and Juliet is a wise yet somewhat indecisive character that causes more problems than he solves. Lawrence is the one who marries Romeo and Juliet, but he’s also the one who causes more stress to them when Romeo is banished. You could also say he is the one who kills the lovers.

The Cross

The cross or crucifix represents his status as a friar and humble Christian. The edges of the cross are bent to signify how he isn’t the perfect friar since he swears on saints and sometimes is very blunt to Romeo. The cross is yellow to demonstrate the power of the church at that time since the church had a huge impact on politics and not many people questioned church followers.

The Masks

The comedy or joyous mask represents Lawrences initial idea to marry the two lovers to stop the fighting between their families. The tragedy or sorrowful mask represents how his idea backfires and causes him, Romeo, and Juliet more stress than before while killing the two lovers.

The Red Sheet

It represents the bloodshed caused by his hasty decision to marry Romeo and Juliet. It also demonstrates the depth of his thought even though his thought isn’t clear like the folds in the sheet.

The Mist

The mist around the cross signifies Lawrences indecisiveness and tendency to change moods depending on the circumstances.

Friar Lawrence played a major role in Romeo and Juliet since he basically caused the death of the lovers.
