⓪ What you will need

① Get registered

Check online if you are already registered. If your home address or name has changed, re-register using the regular registration process below. >>>What if I'm registered somewhere else?<<<

Register online at the state voter registration page (or if you can't due to not having an OR Driver's License/State ID see register by mail below).

Register by mail (only if you can’t register online) by completing a Voter Registration Application and printing and mailing it to your local elections authority (also listed on the final page of the application itself).

Note: Your vote by mail ballot will automatically be sent to the mailing address you provide when submitting/updating your voter registration - make sure you think ahead!

Signatures, beware! The signature on your registration and vote-by-mail ballot request (and on your voted ballot) will be compared to the signature or your OR State ID/Driver’s License.

Make them match. Signing with a mouse may cause a problem, so it may be better to sign on paper & mail. Don't have a printer?

Deadlines. Register and request your vote-by-mail ballot as soon as possible; things take time. Here are the registration deadlines, and the vote-by-mail deadlines.

Common Issues:

② Oregon is a vote-by-mail state

Prefer to vote in-person? Mail ballot voting is the exclusive way to cast your ballot in Oregon. If you would like to drop your ballot off in-person or at a ballot drop box in your county, consult your local elections authority website for information on office hours or ballot drop box locations.

How to receive a vote-by-mail ballot:

All registered voters in Oregon will automatically receive a vote-by-mail ballot to the address specified in their voter registration information. Given the uncertainties surrounding in-person classes and COVID-19 this fall, we recommend leaving this as your home address, that way a parent/guardian can send your mail ballot to you if you are not at home in the months leading up to November. Note: They can not “forward” it; they must put it in an envelope and attach sufficient postage.

If you need to update your home/mailing address, follow the steps for registering in Section ① above.

Alternatively, you can submit a separate Absentee Ballot Request Form to your local elections authority specifying your expected fall mailing address.

Where should I have my vote-by-mail ballot sent?

Given the uncertainty of where you may be living due to COVID, instead of having your vote-by-mail ballot sent to your campus address you may want to have it sent to a friend or relative's home. They can get it to you wherever you are. Ballots can't be "forwarded"; they have to be re-mailed in an outer envelope.

If you have been recently displaced due to wildfires, you have until October 13 (the day before the first ballots are mailed) to change your registration information. Voters can continue to use their prior residential address to register if they do not intend to move, even if their house is not accessible, however, use a temporary address — such as a P.O. box, a friend or relative’s house, or a county elections office — as a mailing address to receive your ballot.

I don't have a valid OR State ID/Driver’s License

If you do not have an OR State ID or Driver’s License, you can register or submit a vote by mail application using your SSN. It doesn't work as smoothly, so don't do this unless you have to.

If you do not have either an OR state-issued ID or a SSN, you must submit a copy of an alternative form of identification (see the “acceptable identification” section on the linked application) that shows your name and home address along with your paper voter registration application as well as your mail ballot.

The address on my OR State ID is incorrect/out of date

The name or address on your ID doesn’t have to be current, however, you must provide an up-to-date home and mailing address.

I’ve moved or changed my name since registering to vote

If your address is incorrect or you have changed your name you must update/re-register to vote following the steps in Section ① of this document.

I need to print/mail a paper form but do not have access to a printer

Not a problem! Please email us at vote@colum.edu with all the documents and/or proof of residence and identification requirements you need printed and we’ll print them and mail them to you.
