“Purim is the Jewish answer to one of the great questions of history: how do you live with the past without being held captive by the past?” – Rabbi Jonathan Sacks
משנכס אדר מרבין בשמחה! This morning, we celebrated Purim here at Community Day School with a traditional Megillah reading for Grades 4-8, where our students read Megillah beautifully after studying with CDS alum and Beth Shalom director of youth tefillah and programming Yasha Rayzberg (pictured below with blue hair…) over the past several months. Yasher koach to all of our Megillah readers and to Yasha on their wonderful accomplishment! Thank you also to Rabbi Seth Adelson, Allan Dalfen, and Eileen Freedman for leading our service, along with Jonathan Weinkle, Beth Kissileff, and Ed Frim for joining in the Megillah reading. And special thanks to Tzippy Mazer for tireless leadership of Tefillah Council all year long and for coordinating all of the CDS Purim events! After the Megillah reading, Akiva and Nadav treated us to a Dr. Seuss-style version of the Book of Esther. Tefillah Council's “High School Musical”-themed Purim Shpiel extravaganza then brought down the house, followed by much rejoicing and dancing to "Mishe Nichnas Adar." We were also thankful to be joined today in our celebration by the Beth Shalom morning minyan and a number of CDS parents and alumni. Students in Pre-K through Grade 3 enjoyed a reenactment of the Purim story during their Megillah reading and a costume parade. Costumes were not short on humor or creativity, including “Stop, Drop, and Roll,” Donald Trump, plenty of superheroes, unicorns, and Harry Potter characters, versions of our own Mr. Minkus, Mrs. Mazer, and Mrs. Munro (the real Mrs. Munro came disguised as Rabbi Munro―see if you can spot her in the photos below!), fairy tale characters, Jake from State Farm, Disney princesses, Alexander Hamilton and Lafayette, Heinz condiments, and much, much more. The fun continue with a Purim carnival for students in Pre-K through Grade 5, with games planned and run by Tefillah Council. The Middle School students painted faces, set bowling pins, timed little ones on the obstacle course and went fishing for Hamantashen. They finally had a chance to relax in the afternoon by enjoying casino games with their favorite teachers. The Book of Esther reports that as a result of the victory of Esther and Mordechai the Jews had light, happiness, joy, and dignity (Esther 8:16)―and boy, could you feel it all at CDS today! Next Tuesday: CDS Art Show We are just over a week away from the first Community Day School Art Show, where you will have the opportunity to experience original and inspired artwork from every student at CDS, from Pre-K to Grade 8. Each piece selected for the show reflects the art history, problem-solving skills, principles of design, and most importantly, personal creativity that your children have used as a lens to produce their work in Jeremy Lerner’s classroom. From 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29, the Ulam K’lalee will be transformed into an art gallery, where you can browse the children’s work while listening to students perform live instrumental music in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Refreshments will be served. Also, many volunteers are needed to help Mr. Lerner set for the Art Show next week. Please use this form to sign up for a time slot on Monday or Tuesday. We look forward to seeing you next Tuesday evening for a beautiful night of expression and celebration of our school community! | ||||||||||||||||||||||
