Diversity Impact 2015
The 5th Annual event continues FNU’s commitment to cultural diversity, competence and teambuilding for current students, faculty and staff.  We streaming the event online for student viewers, and now the recorded session for you to view!

Diversity Impact allowed students to engage in cultural awareness and leadership strategies on current diversity health issues. This event weekend experience prepared nurse practitioners and nurse-midwifery students to meet the growing cultural landscape of the populations they serve.

This year’s PRIDE Diversity Impact Event included multiple concurrent sessions led by FNU faculty as well as student panel presentations.  Below are recorded sessions from Diversity Impact 2015. Select the workshops you are interested in viewing online and enjoy the show!

Recorded: Conquering the Diverse Faces of Incivility: Bullying in the Workplace
Speaker(s): Dr. Tonya Nicholson, Program Director FNU

Bring back the Kindness! Nurses have historically "eaten their young." This can make the transition from nurse to practitioner challenging for any student.  It is time that we bring back the kindness and institute a culture that expects caring and rewards professional behavior. Participants will reflect on their own experiences and propose tools for cleaning up the toxic environment through a Case Study exercise. This presentation will focus on establishing a culture of caring in the student's academic and professional life by equipping the learner to:  1) identify effective communication techniques, 2) identify hallmarks of professional behavior, 3) identify strategies for addressing incivility in the learning and professional environment by: maneuvering difficult conversations, overcoming perceived prejudices, positively influencing the environment, and 4) understand the diverse faces of incivility.

Recorded: Keynote Address
Speaker(s): Dr. Scharmaine Lawson-Baker, NP

As seen on CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, Dr. Scharmaine Lawson-Baker is a nationally recognized and award-winning nurse practitioner in New Orleans, Louisiana. After Hurricane Katrina, Dr. Baker was instrumental in caring for the sick and disabled in New Orleans, where hospitals had closed and doctors had evacuated but never returned. Her patient load went from 100 to 500 in only three months. Her passion and unwavering dedication to caring for homebound patients is what prompted the interview with CBS. Informing patients on their healthcare and encouraging them to participate in decisions became an inspiration focus for her book release “Nola the Nurse”. This session will leave you inspired with renewed determination and motivation to help improve healthcare one patient at a time.

Recorded: Changing the Face of Nursing & Midwifery to Match the Face of Society
Speaker(s): Maria Valentin-Welch, CNM, MPH, FACNM

According to the U.S. Census, America is becoming more and more diverse. It is predicted that by 2044 the majority racial group will be non-White for the first time in America’s history (Colby, & Ortman, 2015; U.S. Census Bureau, 2012). Meanwhile, nursing and midwifery do not reflect this changing demographic (HRSA, 2013; Schuling, Sipe, & Fullerton, 2013). Some ethnically diverse students struggle academically because of various barriers that hinder their recruitment and retention (Smith, 2013; Sutherland et al., 2007). This educational session will be a relaxing laid back session where participants will review academic barriers faced by ethnically diverse students, per the literature. Icebreakers will be included along with group activities to stimulate discussion. Come join us, let your hair down, and let’s have fun while we learn from the literature and each other!
