IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING YOUR Fall 2009 ONLINE COURSES AT NCCC

Dear Electronic Learning Students:

Thank you for choosing to study online with the NCCC Distance Learning Program.  All of our online courses are accessed through the SUNY Learning Network – ANGEL learning management system. All classes follow the same academic schedule as on campus courses and the majority of the classes begin on Tuesday, September 1, 2009.

For ANGEL log on instructions, please visit our website at http://niagaracc.suny.edu and select Electronic Learning from the quick links section. The link to the instructions is located on our Online Education home page. You can also pick up a print copy in the NCCC records and registration office in room A-201.

Even though your course officially begins on September 1st, you will be provided access to the online course (s) on August 25th . This extra week of time is provided to you so that you can get logged in to your course(s), participate in the online student orientation to learn how to use the tools in ANGEL to complete your course work, and get acclimated to the online learning environment. You will also be able to view the course syllabus and text book requirements during this time frame.

Attendance Requirements for Online Courses - You are required to log in to your online course(s) at least three times per week. While logged into your course you must post a question, respond in the discussion forums or submit an assignment as proof of attendance. When you make a submission or posting, the professor will know you are "in class" and you will not be dropped for non-participation, which can affect your financial aid. Since the online program is not bound by specific class times, students are responsible for budgeting their time. Make sure you log into your online course(s) the first day of class and participate in beginning course activities, that way your professor will know you have successfully accessed your course.

If you are new to learning online, please read the back of this page.

If you need any assistance gaining access to your course(s), please contact the SUNY Learning Network Helpdesk at 1-800-875-6269 or submit an electronic help request at:

If you need more information, please contact the Distance Learning office at 716-614-6487 or 716-614-6488.

Best Regards,

Important Information for First Time Online Students

If this is your first time taking an online course, we recommend you attend one of the following student orientation sessions to learn how to navigate the learning management system and participate in an online course.

Are you ready for Online Learning?

Find out by completing the READI assessment. It will take you about 30 minutes from start to finish but you may log out and complete it later if necessary. After you login, you will receive an email from READI with a READI PIN number that will allow you to log back in later or view your results again. Your READI score will not prevent you from registering for online classes. It is a tool that will help you assess your strengths and weaknesses related to distance learning in 5 areas.

1. Individual Attributes – procrastination, time management, willingness to ask for help, academic attributes

2. Learning Styles – what is your predominant learning style?

3. Technical Competency, Skills, and Knowledge

4. On-Screen Reading Rate and Comprehension

5. Typing Speed and Accuracy

You will receive a full color report immediately following the completion of all areas of READI. It also provides some remedial tools to help you strengthen your weaknesses.
