All Students

Information Skills—Ethically Use Information

 

All students will receive instruction in the ethical use of information each year at COHS. Instruction is standardized in the CJUHSD and includes, but is not limited to:

Þ    Appropriate and ethical use of information technology

Þ    Internet safety

• Cyber-bullying
• Guarding personal information

Þ    Avoiding plagiarism

Þ    The concept, purpose and significance of a copyright

• Distinguishing lawful from unlawful online downloading
• Understanding the implications of peer-to-peer network file sharing

 

Read, View and Listen Critically

 

Þ    Identify favorite authors and genres.

Þ    Identify both print and electronic sources of information for topics of personal interest.

Þ    Identify both print and electronic sources of information about current events.

Þ    Articulate criteria used to evaluate either a fictional or factual work.

Ninth-Grade Students

All 9^th grade research papers and projects should incorporate:

 

Þ     Research and Inquiry

o       Ask an original question.

o       Formulate a topic for research that requires an original conclusion supported by evidence.

o       Identify information resources available/determine which sources are best for the project.

• Primary sources
• Locate/gather Information.

§        Use the online library catalog.

§        Locate print resources in the library and be able to use tables of contents and indices.

§        Use the school-supported databases.

§        Use an Internet search engine.

o       Evaluate Information.

§        Judge the currency of information.

§        Judge the accuracy of information by comparing it to at least one other source.

o       Communicate/Use Information.

§        Present information in a paper or presentation, on a web site, class wiki, or in another format designated by the teacher.

o       Cite Resources

§        Properly cite sources of information, both print and electronic, in a ‘works cited’ section at the end of a research paper or project using MLA guidelines.

 

Þ     Technology Skills

o       Appropriate technology will be used in each step above.

 

Tenth-Grade Students

Incorporate all of the requirements of ninth-grade information literacy. Additionally:

 

Þ     Research and Inquiry

• Locate/gather information.

• Use multiple Internet search engines efficiently.
• Use advanced search skills on the school-supported databases (such as limiting searches to specific publications or publication dates).
• Use databases provided by the city library.

• Evaluate information.

§        Judge the accuracy of information.

• Identify the bias of the source.
• Compare at least three sources, of which at least one must be print, for consistency in data.

• Use information.

• Take summary notes (without plagiarizing).
• Use source and note cards.

• Cite resources.

• Correctly paraphrase resources.
• Correctly quote resources.
• Include inline citations using MLA guidelines.
• Cite sources of illustrations, photos, graphics, and music used in papers and presentations.
