All Students

Information Skills—Ethically Use Information

 

All students will receive instruction in the ethical use of information each year at COHS. Instruction is standardized in the CJUHSD and includes, but is not limited to:

Þ    Appropriate and ethical use of information technology

Þ    Internet safety

Þ    Avoiding plagiarism

Þ    The concept, purpose and significance of a copyright

 

Read, View and Listen Critically

 

Þ    Identify favorite authors and genres.

Þ    Identify both print and electronic sources of information for topics of personal interest.

Þ    Identify both print and electronic sources of information about current events.

Þ    Articulate criteria used to evaluate either a fictional or factual work.


Ninth-Grade Students

All 9th grade research papers and projects should incorporate:

 

Þ     Research and Inquiry

o       Ask an original question.

o       Formulate a topic for research that requires an original conclusion supported by evidence.

o       Identify information resources available/determine which sources are best for the project.

§        Use the online library catalog.

§        Locate print resources in the library and be able to use tables of contents and indices.

§        Use the school-supported databases.

§        Use an Internet search engine.

o       Evaluate Information.

§        Judge the currency of information.

§        Judge the accuracy of information by comparing it to at least one other source.

o       Communicate/Use Information.

§        Present information in a paper or presentation, on a web site, class wiki, or in another format designated by the teacher.

o       Cite Resources

§        Properly cite sources of information, both print and electronic, in a ‘works cited’ section at the end of a research paper or project using MLA guidelines.

 

Þ     Technology Skills

o       Appropriate technology will be used in each step above.

 

Tenth-Grade Students

Incorporate all of the requirements of ninth-grade information literacy. Additionally:

§        Judge the accuracy of information.
