Minutes: Sept 20th, 2009

- Call to Order
- Approval of Minutes
- Two sentences were removed. Devin moved to approve revised minutes. David seconded.
- Approval of Agenda
- Devin went over agenda for today (9/20). David moved to approve agenda, Howard seconded.

- Event Planning
- Sam Bass Bicycle Challenge: This Saturday, Sept 26th @ 8am-6pm (10 hrs)
- Devin reports that event hours are 8-6 now.
- Devin also reported that Industrial St Guild says a guy is providing for us bike racks.
- Devin reports that we'll use McCain (Overhead Door) building on Hickory for bike valet parking.
- It was proposed that the new shifts will be:
- 1st shift: 8am - 1pm
- 2nd shift: 1pm - 6pm
- Volunteer Coordination: Devin and Luis volunteered to operate the 1st shift. Howard volunteered to do 2nd shift (tentative first shift). Nate, Eric, and Erica volunteered the second shift. Howard mentioned that Nic might be able to volunteer all day long and may be able to provide his truck for some transportation.
- We will tell those using our services that we are not providing service after 6pm.
- Howard will make blog post mentioning that the Sam Bass event will be going on and that shop will be canceled. A sign stating such will be posted in front of the current shop.
- Dallas Cyclesomatic Bikefest Event: October 10th
- Have green bikes to display
- Make upcoming shop day theme: green bikes
- Bikes-to-Kids Project Update
- Howard mentioned a start date of Oct 2. About 30 children have already agreed to participate and are very excited. The event will be open for three weeks. Once closed (week of Oct 26), judges (as yet to be determined) will go to the school (Tomas Rivera Elementary) and choose the winning entries. Around 4:30pm when school is closed, the victors will be allowed to reap the spoils of contest.
- Entries to be 2D, 12 x 18", possibly using recycled tubes and reflectors
- Howard reports about 11 bikes were set aside at last shop day. We should aim to bring 8 or finished bikes for the 3 winners to choose from.
- Howard coordinating with Emily Fowler library for winning entry display
- Remington to contact newspaper, other PR, etc
- Howard to contact councilwoman Heggins
- Howard contacted Tom Woods at Denton PD to inquire if they're interested in participating. Call not returned yet.
- Community Ride: Saturday, Oct 3rd
- Ride planning proposed. Maybe a South Ridge themed ride in support of the neighborhood citizens that want to open a bike lane on Pennsylvania.
- Next Benefit Show: Dec 2009
- Howard reports that Dan's does not have dates available for December other than Tuesdays. In January, the 9th, 15th, or 30th .
- Howard talked about the possibility of a someone outside QCBS having a house show during December and donating the proceeds. Devin raised concerns over the logistics of a house show. Howard stated that if a house show is proposed for December it will not be an "official QCBS" event, but that proceeds may help the group.
- It was tentatively decided that the official benefit show would be held on Jan 30th. Howard would talk to Dan about reserving Jan 30th. Howard and Remington to further discuss date/venue options for benefit.
- Shop Business
- 3 new Park stands acquired: $240 total
- Howard found ad on DORBA board and drove to east Dallas to pick up 3 used Park professional stands with cast aluminum jaws and heavy bases.
- Shop Day Report from Sat 9/19
- Coordinator: Howard, Greeter: Erika, Theme: kids bikes
- Howard reported on shop day. It went well. Three bikes were donated. Three teams of people worked on kids bikes. People came in and worked on their own bikes. Cooper said more tarps are needed.

- For sign, Rachelle said she needed paint for the shop rules sign. Said it should be put on Howard's front porch. Devin will deliver paint to Rachelle or put on Howard's front porch.

- UNT outreach campaign
- Email from Carol P. Ogden, Assistant Director, UNT IELI
- Carrol from IELI (Intensive English Language Institute) program at UNT wanted a Querencia speaker to come and talk about biking around Denton and being . Devin brought up that it should be a mini-tabling event. Group nominated external coordinator to talk to Carrol about details on what she would like us to do.
- Partnering with UNT Transportation - tabled indefinitely
- Email from Garrett Scholberg, Residential Assistant @ College Inn
- Group nominated external coordinator to talk to RA from College Inn dorm that was interested in having shop day at dorm for students.
- Brochures
- Howard will send Bibi an e-mail this week to talk about making flyers for brochures. Howard and Nate will figure out how many flyers will be printed. Group leaves meeting location and hours unchanged. Group agrees to print about 100-200 flyers this time instead of 1000 like last time.
- Devin proposes that meeting be extended 15 minutes. Howard seconds.

- Howard and Remington looked for alternatives and found nothing viable.
- Group briefly discusses need for a marker/chalk board to use to display agendas. Luis mentions that Banter has previously approved us to leave one there.
