Contemporary Artist Exhibition

Description:

Each student will investigate a practicing artist in order to collaboratively curate an exhibition of art in Second Life.

Assignment:

  1. Explore the Internet or Second Life to find a practicing artist that can be contacted by IM, email, phone, or other means. From information that is publicly attainable (on their website or at their SL gallery), create 5 interview questions that investigate their work in further detail.
  2. Contact the artist. Ask 5 questions. Forward the email response to me.
    • I recommend you explaining that this is for an Intro to Art class project that investigates practicing artists. Also, give them a date when these answers are needed by.
    • I recommend that you email more than one artist in order to obtain responses on time (in case one doesn’t work out)
  3. Obtain permission to use at least 1 image(s) of their work in Second Life for our exhibition.
    • I recommend you make this clear in your initial email, so that you don’t get thru the questions then find out you can’t use their work.
  4. Upload their image to Second Life (Instructor will provide Lindens needed for this; $10L). Working with the other students, decide:
    • What are the similarities or differences between the artists?
    • Are these similarities or differences based on mediums, themes or concepts, or something else?
  5. Collaboratively consider:
    • How should the gallery be organized? What signage is needed for viewers to navigate the gallery coherently?
  6. A Second Life script will be given out so that each artwork will read the artist’s name and title of the work in local chat when clicked. Each student must modify the script and put it into their work.
  7. Finally, there will be a public opening of the exhibition at which each student will present his or her artist.
