Course: ART101: Introduction to Art (Online)

Bowling Green State University

Instructor: Anthony Fontana

Art Influenced by History

Description:

Each student will find one image from the history of art to make his or her own artwork about. Students must investigate how the artwork was made, in what context, and about what concept.

Assignment:

  1. Using the Internet or your local library find an image from art history that has a strong emotional, intellectual, or psychology effect on you. Investigate:
    • How was the artwork made? With what medium or technique?
    • In what context was the work made? Was it made for someone, for sale, for exhibition?
    • What was the idea or concept behind the work? How did this concept fit within that period of artwork?
  2. Gather the materials necessary for you to create your own artwork influenced by the one you have found.
    • What materials will you use? What technique? There are no restrictions.
  3. Create your artwork thinking about the following:
    • Will this artwork address the same issues conceptually?
    • What elements might you pull from the original (lines, shapes, colors)? What elements might you change or manipulate?
  4. Your artwork will be uploaded to Second Life for an in-progress critique with other students and Instructor
    • Artwork may be scanned, photographed (and cropped neatly), or created digitally. Any photographs should be taken in well lit environments. I recommend shooting photos of artwork outside at a time when there will be little to no shadows. Crop all artworks neatly using a digital editing program if necessary.
    • I recommend Pixlr.com for any digital editing that may need to be done (for students who do not have Photoshop).
  5. Write 3 paragraphs to accompany your artwork in the gallery as a Second Life ‘Notecard’. Should detail how the original artwork was made and how student was influenced by the work. This may also be used as a blog post.
  6. The final artwork will be critiqued at a gallery on the BGSU Virtual Campus in Second Life. Each artwork will be placed next to the original image it was influenced by.
    • The Instructor will supply the Linden dollars for each upload ($30L total)
