More word on the ever growing pirate radio scene in Boston Mass.
gray_fluid posts several current FM pirate stations,
87.7 -
Hot 97 - moved from 97.5. DJ Chubby Chub & Co...very professional in production, great audio processing and very strong signal. Transmits out of Dorchester but can be heard as far away as Lowell. HipHop, R&B, Dancehall
87.9 - The Wave - North of Boston. Can be heard from Somerville all the way north to Hampton Beach, NH. Transmits from Boxford, MA. Oldies/Classics. Audio not so good at all.
88.5 - This occasional pirate is the dude who got the equipment after the Zeitgeist gallery pirate was shutdown. Transmits occasionally from the Winter Hill area of Somerville. The one time I caught it, the dude played an obscure Jefferson Airplane album from start to finish and talked about having to go "release bodily fluids".
96.5 - Caribbean - Dorchester but reaches well into the burbs like belmont, arlington, somerville and beyond. Audio is waaaay over modulated.
99.7 -
Datz Hitz Gospel Caribbean - Dorchester or Mattapan.
101.3 -
Big City FM - Caribbean, HipHop, R&B - Dorchester. This powerful station is heard up to the NH border to the north. Decent programming and production value. Audio processing isn't bad either.
102.9 -
Choice 102.9 - Caribbean - also out of Dorchester. Been around a long long time and has accumulated a lot of fine$ from the FCC.
105.3 -
Vibe 105.3 - Caribbean - Mattapan. Audio modulation needs a little work. Signal gets out pretty good to immediate suburbs before licensed stations on same frequency come in from Providence and New Hampshire.
106.1 -
Touch FM - Urban/HipHop/R&B/Reggae. Dorchester. Been around for a few years...signal not so good outside of dorch/pan/bury.

Rockin' Rick posted a long, detailed, and technical post on the "60 Hz hum" thread. Personally I think Rick is just taunting me with that post. 6 paragraphs that could be directly out of a electrical engineers text book. Thanks Rick, If I was smarter could probably condense it.
nothing40 has a bit more straight foreword post noting he cures his Hum by adding some small capacitors in parallel with the rectifier diodes, something around 0.01uf.
William K Hertz posts asking about the Audacity software.
SeaLord lends a hand by explaining how to import an audio file into Audacity and add some echo effect. I should note that the piratesweek is entirely produced on Audacity, its a free software editing program available through sourceforge.

Other Radio News: From the Radio Heritage Foundation comes the
Australian AM Radio guide 1611-1701. Almost 70 low power stations are now broadcasting in Australia's expanded AM radio dial almost two decades after the new channels became available. The Radio Heritage Foundation has released a detailed list of Australian stations currently operating in the 1611-1701 AM band together with analysis of this fascinating and little known broadcasting landscape.
It's currently available as a
downloadable Word document at www.radioheritage.net and will be updated regularly.
Closer to home, Radio Survivor is reporting that There’s some excellent news from the FCC today. They’ve just
announced that there will be another window of opportunity for non-commercial, educational broadcasters to obtain an FM frequency.
Between Friday, December 11 and Friday, December 18, 2009; aspiring stations will be able to apply for open FM frequencies.
there is a list of where these frequencies are located to see if your community might be able to benefit from this fantastic opportunity to go FM. 67 open frequencies, ranging from stations in Hemet, California to Otter Creek, Florida.
Radio Survivor is also reporting that
The FCC just announced today that they’d levied $7,000 fines against several college radio stations for “failure to timely file renewal application,” which in turn led to “unauthorized operation” of said stations. Reportable these stations will be able to retain their licences.
Some good news from Washington this week. With a unanimous voice vote, the House Energy and Commerce Committee passed the Local Community Radio Act Thursday. By repealing restrictions that drastically limit channels available to low power FM (LPFM) stations, the Act will allow hundreds of community groups nationwide to access the public airwaves.
The popular, bipartisan legislation is on the fast track to becoming law. Shortly after all five FCC Commissioners reaffirmed the FCC’s longstanding support, the bill passed out of the House Subcommittee on Communications, Technology and the Internet by a voice vote. After today’s passage out of committee, the Local Community Radio Act heads for a floor vote in the House.
