pw-pir8innews (MP3) Pirates in the newsRadio Dr Tim Newsletter that covers the European Shortwave pirate news is reporting some Bad news from Russia! From the deep south of the Russian Empire in the North Caucasus the pirate radio station SNOWBALL / SNEGOVIK was taken off the air by the Russian authorities the PTT
Dr Tim further reports that the entire studio confiscated or seized.
Details on the raid are sketchy as not music is known about radio Snowball.
I was reading an article about Pirate radio in The Dorchester News. Titled "
Low-power radio has a role to play in making communities". This Boston area newspaper discussed Some of the stations in their local area including the FM pirate Hot 97 Boston, which has been playing hide and seek with the FCC and GRLZ Radio,a local Internet stream and micro broadcaster. What I found interesting was the open question the author posted to the FCC regulators. which was: "These stations actually do have an audience, so ask yourself this: If people are listening, are they not filling a need?" I found that strikingly profound.

Katie Bezrouch did a nice
writeup on Pirate Cat Radio on Imagine 2050. The standard article that is written every month or so on what is probably the most well known pirate radio station operating in the US. She describes the Cafe, Monkey- the owner and operator of Pirate Cat and some background on the station. Its a fun read, links in the show notes

The Poet gives an update on his U verse Internet provider box. We reported last week on this ongoing thread that his U verse box that supplies Internet, cable TV and Phone connection shuts down when he broadcasts with high power. The poet reports that There was no shutdown during the test the other night AFTER he had tuned up at about half-power, running 45 watts carrier with about 90-watt mod peaks. Before that at full power, everything DID get shut down. ha has attached one ferrite choke tha the had on hand and has ordered several more to alleviate the problem.
Workshop ForumRadioAnarchy posts asking about that annoying 60 Hz hum on strong signals in their portable SW receiver, while powering it with a wall wart. He asks if there is a solution to this problem. (other than using batteries)

Well I see now that MFJ has two scanners about to go on sale, a $100.00 tabletop base, MFJ-8310, and a $200.00 portable, MFJ-8322. And like you when I'd 1st seen that I said,"Yeah? So what?". Until he looked at the specs on the portable MFJ-8322. It covers 10M, 6M, 2M, 222MHz, 70cm, 33cm (900MHz), and 23cm (1.2GHz)! So it's like having a seven band amateur RX radio. He suspects that this may e a Uniden rig & is looking for a Uniden model hitting the market soon.
