FAQ

Q: Why 2 minutes' silence?
A: As a mark of respect and remembrance for Neda Agha Soltan and all those who have lost their lives in the uprising in Iran since the election of 12 June.

Q: Why a 'Wave of Silence'?
A: Because it echoes the sentiment of the Green Wave; and it maximises the opportunity for supporters around the world to take part. In particular, it provides the opportunity to organise events outside during daylight for the southern hemisphere.

Q: Why 11am?
A: 11am is a time traditionally chosen to honour those who have given their lives for cause or country.

Q: Why 6:30pm?
Neda Agha Soltan was shot to death at approximately 6:30pm. This is one way of tying the event to her memory, as it will be 40 days on Thursday 30th July 2009 since she was murdered.

Q: Why is 40 days significant?
A: In the Muslim Shi'ite faith, the dead are honoured 3, 7 and 40 days after their passing, then on the yearly anniversary of their death by tradition.

Q: Why not everyone silent at the same time?
A: Because that would be difficult to co-ordinate and not everyone who supports the Green Movement (as the current protest in Iran has been termed) is going to be available at exactly the same time on that day
