The Murray River which was created by the great Hunter and the cod fish . Legend has it that long ago in the Dreamtime there was a mighty hunter and one day as he chassed the Murray cod, the hunter followed the cod (who had the shape of a man) on rafts made of red gums. The cod was quick and slippery as he formed a channel in the earth, carving out the rivers and the hills. The landscape we have today. One day he reached the place where the site of a town now stands and he camped there with his two wives. Gunewarra, the black swans, and his two sons. The next day the great hunter was forced to beach one of his rafts, and he often created new ones as he moved from beach to beach in the river. At a place along the river, the hunter threw a spear at the cod and finally got lucky, and struck the cod in the back. The hunter threw many spears which may be seen as the spines along the back of the fish. the cod rushed to the banks of the waterhole and charged off, making the channel which became the Murray river. Eager to rectify, His failure to catch his prey, the hunter and his wives hurried on, and took positions high on a cliff. They sprang an ambush on the cod only to fail again. The great warrior set off in pursuit again but lost his prey as the fish dived into a great lake. The warrior and his women settled on shore, only to suffer bad luck with fishing. They moved to a more suitable spot at a site which is a town named Murray Bridge in south Australia, they made a deep waterhole and hid. Later, they escaped into the sky to become a star.©
