Kingsland Library Pays Tribute to Veterans during Month of November There once was a man who wrote a poem about a field of flowers, a field that probably would have gone unnoticed by most of the world throughout the years had not many men mixed their blood with the crimson of the poppy flowers that grew there, and the crosses that stood in place of those men. The poem, “In Flander’s Fields,” spoke to a generation, demanding remembrance for the fallen, and duty from those who remained. Today, this call to duty and remembrance is still embraced in the subtle, but, crimson reminder worn on the hearts of thousands of Americans each Memorial and Veteran’s Day in the form of simple paper poppies offered by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliaries. This November, the Kingsland Library wishes to pay tribute to the men and women who have served our country throughout the years. In our front lobby entrance, please take time to witness a special display that honors some of America’s heroes who have lived, or whose families have been part of our community. The display was arranged through a cooperative effort of our local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliaries. Note in the display that closed poppies honor soldiers who have died, while open poppies honor those who are living. On November 3, Chris Putnam of Kingsland’s Putnam Funeral Home and John Paylor of the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen joined us for our monthly lunch and learn program to discuss benefits available to those who have served their country. Veterans and families of veterans are encouraged to contact the Kingsland Library to receive more information about what was discussed during the program. Cynthia Ozick, American writer, once said, “We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.” This Veteran’s Day, take time to show gratitude for the men and women who have served us so faithfully. Friends of the Kingsland Library Host Annual Book Sale Guest Interview Article by: A Friends of the Kingsland Library Member For over fifty years, the Kingsland community has supported its library with generous donations and patronage. The Kingsland Library adds quality of life to all who reside here. The Friends of the Kingsland Library was established to assist the Library with financial and volunteer support. Its sole purpose is to maintain and upgrade this valuable community asset. The Friends have hosted an annual book sale for many years. Prior to the 1999 addition to the Library, the sale was held in the storage room! It’s difficult to comprehend that in 2009, more than a thousand books are now offered for sale to our ever-growing community. All the materials that are offered for sale are from direct donations from the community or as a result of the culling of out-dated or less-circulated materials from the Library. The annual book sale is the major fundraiser for the Friends of the Kingsland Library. Each year, many volunteers bring a semblance of order to these donated books, videos, CDs, DVDs, and puzzles. There are materials for children and teens, large print books for adults, and hardback and paperback fiction and non-fiction books for nearly anyone’s taste. All of these are offered for minimum prices-- 25¢--$5.00. There are often “treasures” that may be priced higher. Our community supports the book sale with enthusiasm and money! All of the proceeds directly benefit the community because the Friends purchase equipment and books, support programs for children, teens, and adults, and provide funds that are not allocated by the County. This year’s sale is scheduled for November 13 & 14, 9AM-5PM in the large meeting room. We invite everyone to help make this sale a success so that our library can continue to be one of the best! Teen Library League: Mashed Potato Madness What do you get when you combine mashed potatoes, flour, powdered sugar, peanut butter, and the Kingsland Teen Library League? It all began at the last Thursday TLL meeting in October when the cold mashed potatoes became hot mashed potatoes and melted the powdered sugar. “Squish, squish” went the mixture as eager hands kneaded… and kneaded,,, and kneaded the mixture. There it sat… gooey as ever and looking very un-jellyroll-like and, consequently, looking very unlike what it was supposed to look like. Someone suggested more sugar, someone else advised more mashed potatoes… Enter an emergency flour call to which a gallant spouse quickly responded, delivering a pound of flour to a somewhat anxious group of Library Leaguers and their sticky leader. “Plop, squish, slooop!” went the doubled mashed potato candy into a large bowl. Add, flour...and more flour… and, a pinch, no a cup more flour— ta-da! Now we knead. What do you get when you combine mashed potatoes, flour, powdered sugar, peanut butter, and the Kingsland Teen Library League? Sticky hands, smiling faces, and a giant mashed potato candy slug! (Which, by the way, still looked nothing like the picture!) Food for Thought: Cheesy Turkey with Pasta Ingredients: *(16 ounce) package rigatoni pasta *1/4 cup butter *1/4 cup all-purpose flour *1 cup turkey stock *1/2 cup pasta sauce *1 cup water *1/2 (1 ounce) package dry onion soup mix *1 teaspoon crushed garlic *salt and pepper to taste *1/3 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese *1/3 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese *1 pound cooked turkey breast, cubed Directions: Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add pasta and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until al dente; drain. In a large saucepan or deep skillet, melt the butter over low to medium heat; blend in flour. Slowly add turkey stock, pasta sauce, and water. Mix well. Stir in onion soup mix and garlic; season with salt and pepper. Sprinkle in the Monterey Jack, Cheddar cheese and turkey. Stir until the cheese is melted and the meat is heated through. Spoon sauce over pasta and serve.
