THE CITY COMMISSION OF
OAKLAND PARK
WHEREAS, Oakland Park is committed to equal rights for all in Florida, having adopted provisions in its City Ordinances protecting Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) employees from discrimination with the inclusion of “sexual orientation”, “gender expression” and “gender identity” as protected classes; and
WHEREAS, Oakland Park led the way in South Florida and all of Florida by being one of the first cities to provide its employees with domestic partner benefits, recognizing the diversity of family configurations and relationships inclusive of the GLBT Community; and
WHEREAS, Oakland Park continued its leadership role by unanimously voting to oppose any attempts to take these important benefits away from its employees; and
WHEREAS, Oakland Park proudly celebrates and supports the diversity of its citizens, including the GLBT Community; and
WHEREAS, the Oakland Park City Commission has been a leader in supporting the equality of its GLBT employees and residents, and
WHEREAS, Pride of Greater Fort Lauderdale is a non-profit organization within the GLBT community of Greater Fort Lauderdale, committed to the goals of human rights, education and a better understanding of GLBT community.
WHEREAS, Pride of Greater Fort Lauderdale was formed in 2000 to produce the Stonewall Street Festival to celebrate the Stonewall Rebellion on New York's Christopher Street in June of 1969; and
WHEREAS, Pride of Greater Fort Lauderdale, in conjunction with the Human Rights Campaign, will show a film in Jaco Pastorius Park on June 19 at 8 p.m. which documents the struggle for gay rights before the Stonewall Rebellion.
BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF OAKLAND PARK, FLORIDA:
That the Commission supports Pride of Greater Fort Lauderdale for its continued leadership and success in performing its mission and delivering valuable support to the South Florida LGBT Community and consistently achieving the goals of the organization, and hereby names June GLBT pride and equality month.
